This study has the purpose to provide the fundamental materials for the right use of fairy tales in children education area by examining the actual condition of fairy tales, teachers' perception and efforts, furthermore the problems and the method for improvement. The study subjects are as follows:
1. What is the holding condition of fairy tales in kindergartens?
2. What is the condition of use of fairy tales?
3. What is the teachers' knowledge and efforts?
4. What is the problem and the method for improvement which teachers think in using fairy tales?
221 teachers from kindergartens in Busan province were selected as samles for the study, and the questionnaires developed by Park Hae-Kyuong(2001), Hong Sa-Hyok(2001), and Gu Bon-Kyoung(2002) were adopted, and applied to this study.
SPSS 12.0(ver.) was used for the data analysis. And the frequency analysis and Chi-square analysis were used as the statistical method.
The main results from this study are as follows.
First, ‘Korean fairy tales' are used the most and the type of fairy tales which institutions the most is ‘fairy-tale book'. 41.6% of them possess all the types of fairy tales; picture book, fairy-tale book, non-woven fabric and magnetic fairy tales, slide and OHP fairy tales, fairy tales with dolls, and fairy tales with media.
Second, most of institutions adopt ‘large group activity' in using fairy tales and the most favorite type of fairy tales which teachers think that children like is ‘fairy tales with dolls'
The most frequent time when teacher use the fairy tales is ‘after dynamic activities' and ‘before going to home', 27.1% respectively. The integrated(linked) activities with fairy tales is mainly ‘talking and thinking of them'. Most teachers also responded that the integrated activities is ‘effective'. According to the actual condition of fairy tales based on the type of groups, ‘large group' and ‘small group' use ‘Korean original fairy tales' the most, and for personal direction, ‘foreign original fairy tales' are used the most. For the type of fairy tales which teachers use the most, ‘picture fairy tales' is used for large group, ‘fairy-tale book' is used for small group and personal direction the most. In the most frequency where fairy tales are used, large group is ‘twice or three time a week', small group is ‘once a week', and personal direction is ‘once or twice a month'. The purpose to use fairy tales is ‘to improve ability and attitude to reach and appreciate literatures' for large group, ‘to promote creativeness and imagination' for small group, and ‘to develop language skill for personal direction'. The most asked question is ‘impression from the fairy tales' for large and small group, and ‘imagination of them' for personal direction.
The way teachers abstain fairy tales is ’from the institutions' the most. The criteria to choose fairy tales is ’the relation with daily life' for large group, ‘interest and demand of children' for small group, and ‘children's development level' for personal direction.
The most gained response from children in using fairy tales is ‘to like them very much' and there is no negative response. For the effectiveness of fairy tales, ‘interest in fairy tales' for large group, ‘interaction among children' for small group, and ‘right reading habit and attitude' for personal direction' respectively.
Third, 63.3% of teachers told that ‘they have had training related to fairy tales' and also they suggested that the training is ‘somewhat necessary' For the effort to use fairy tales, teachers ‘collect information related to children books'. 76% told that they had experience to develop and produce fairy tales' and 35.6% ‘produce fairy tales with co-workers', but the same ratio of teachers produce them alone or with children.
Fourth, the most main problems in using fairy tales is ‘the lack of time for producing or preparing fairy tales media'. And 47.5% of teachers suggested that ‘development and diffusion of various media of fairy tales' are the ways to overcome the problems.
