Korea is observing the rapidly aging population which is almost unparalleled anywhere in the world. It is expected that Korea will enter a super-aged society with over-65-year-old people accounting for 20.8% of the whole population by 2026. By this time middle-aged women can arrive at senescence without a plan for providing for their own old age after taking care of children in terms of excessive educational expenses and housing expenses. In this respect, it is important for individuals themselves to make economic, psychological, and physical preparations systematically according to the life cycle in order to arrive at healthy senescence. In particular, female Buddhists should make concrete and immediate preparations for their old age to lead a happy and affluent life through good conduct and volunteer services at temples or welfare centers. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts to get social support by maintaining good personal relations and positive attitudes from their middle years in order not to spend their remaining years meaninglessly with mental anxiety in their old age. To do this, many types of social participation including desirable works, leisure activities, dilettante life, and volunteer services are necessary in addition to people who can psychologically rely on. This study aimed at investigating female Buddhists' awareness of preparations for their old age and making strategic suggestions to relevant middle-aged Buddhist women, social organizations, and temples.
As for the general trend of preparations for old age, psychological preparations were higher than physical or economic ones. The younger, the higher educational level, the more monthly income, and the more professional, the better preparations for old age. It is therefore necessary to take long-term measures against old age for the relatively poor bracket. The significant issues expected of old age were poverty and the need for medical insurance. Here, social organizations or government authorities should also take long-term measures.
There are great needs for leisure activities and programs for old age. Social organizations or temples should therefore expand and develop leisure facilities actively. There are also great needs for volunteer services at temples in old age. Social organizations or temples should develop programs and maintain systems to enable positive volunteer services in old age, actively encouraging volunteer services. In particular, social organizations, cultural facilities, welfare centers, or temples should provide lectures or courses for preparations for old age to help middle-aged women prepare for their old age.
On the basis of the history of Korean Buddhism, female Buddhists have power to support Korean Buddhism. Their power will increase in the future. The Buddhist society should pay much attention to female Buddhists' welfare so that they can display their ability to the utmost. In particular, temples should enhance middle-aged Buddhist women's awareness of preparations for their old age so that they can lead a comfortable and affluent life in their old age.
