佛敎의 喪ㆍ葬禮에 關한 考察 = A Consideration on the Mourning & Funeral Ceremonies of Buddhism

There should be several reasons that cremation became traditional funeral ceremonies since Buddhism take place at India. Cremation might be best way to give religious meaning of Buddhism.
As religious belief and rituals are indivisible in general, Buddhism's creed such as 'All is vanity'and return to nature like soil, water, fire and wind well harmonize each other.
Buddha used cremation to show symbolical meaning that he pass into nirvana. In that sense cremation of Buddhism does not mean simply burning human body but it contain renounce agony and get into nirvana.
As we know cremation ritual of Korea add some unique contents to traditional India style cremation. Originally cremation ritual contains ecstatic factor, it persuade one's soul to get rid of cling to human society and it shows eternity of soul and reincarnation.
Also cremation ritual show strong will to pray for nirvana not only for oneself but also for all human beings. It is special character of Buddhism that can not be found in Confucian's funeral ceremonies.
Current funeral ceremonies are different from traditional buddhism's ritual. It newly formed after Japanese colonial rule. After industrialization and urbanization of 70's, space for grave became scarce and negative notion for destruction of ecosystem became big issue and cremation caught attention but still negative notion still sprayed out.
To be cultural phenomena of current times to spread out cremation rate. We need to get rid of negative notion of Japaness style cremation. Solution for this can be found to modify our traditional cremation ritual as to current times. That can be established through both enhance our traditional cremation spirit and self examination of necessity of cremation in this times. To do that Buddhist should present concrete alternatives not declaratory discussion. In that alternatives, first thing should be keep in mind is that complicate cremation ritual must be modify and unified to current times. If that process completed buddhism's cremation ritual can be realized through ecological and environmental necessity of this times.
