아이덴티티 표현기법으로써의 전각(篆刻)에 관한 연구 = Analysis of Seal Engraving as an Identity Expression Method

Design is created by the people living in that era and thus the intrinsic nature and the basis of the design manifests itself as a unified cultural shape representing the era after continuous transformation through the past by the mankind.
The distinctiveness of current identity design, in the process of expressing our own in the face of globalization, is being ignored and the definition of identity has been tainted. Therefore, in order to discuss solutions to the new possibilities for efficient identity design, it is necessary to talk about the essential problem that has been mentioned.
The birth of identity came ever since mankind started to express oneself in various ways during the human culture such as carvings, pictures, and letters. Therefore the birth could be traced back to prehistoric age when mankind made wall paintings and comb pattern earthenware. In addition, the seal engraving is a distinct orient symbolic factor that started from Northeast Asia and unique to orient's historical tradition. The seal engraving is a form of self expression at displays ones character. It pursues infinite change within a set of rules and each and every one of these seal engravings has its own unique features.
In the stand point of today, the seal engravings represent various formats and symbols with aesthetic qualities in either on its own or within the surrounding sculptural environment. These characteristics of the seal engraving will play a role as differentiating function of identity design expression factor. In addition, if it is applied to personal identity design, the value of the individual can be differentiated from the others and this individual's information can be transmitted more accurately and with more speed.
Everything we currently own can become judgment basis for our identity. In other words, it means that reproduced past can be one of the identity judgment factors and it also means that wherever it started, the things that currently receive support and approval of the Korean public is distinctly Korean. Even though seal engravings started and thrived in China, their arrival in Korea together with current creative advancement of the seal engravings makes them our own culture.
The rediscovery of the traditional symbol in seal engravings and resultant identity design utilizing the symbol should always put development in motion, to show the value and meaning of tradition, instead of encapsulating the seal to be fixated in the past. If we truly realize the meaning of seal engraving and make it our own culture using identity expression method, we can then spread more advanced form of seal engraving to the world as one of our own.
If through this analysis, the birth of identity design was understood, and express and understand personal identity by using the seal engraving of the oriental art, it will not only perform a symbolic function for an individual but also function as an identity design with oriental sense of notion and beauty.
