The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group bibliotherapy program designed for the improvement of self-esteem on adult women christians' self-esteem, quality of life and spiritual self-esteem.
The subject of this study were 8 Christian women aged 30 to 45 living in Busan. For this study, the subjects took part in 8 sessions once every week from October 25th to December 13th.
Before participating in bibliotherapy program, the participants was supposed to write each's impression after reading books. Bibliotherapy program was processed in a way of interaction group counseling for 4 hours each session. The first activity included identification, catharsis, insight, application, answering the questions about God. The second and third activities included various activities such as creative writing, art working and role play. Various books and movies in relation to improvement for adult women's self-esteem were provided as reading materials. Through these various activities and materials, the interrelation between self-esteem and three factors - the quality of life, spiritual well-being, the spiritual self-esteem as christians - were examined.
Coopersmith(1967)'s self-esteem scale and No(1988)'s test for the quality of life were used before- and after-practicing the bibliotherapy program and analyzed into t-test by SPSS 11.0. Quality analysis was conducted through the questions concerning spiritual well-being and spiritual self-esteem in God during the processing. Quantity analysis of spiritual well-being was conducted after completing the program.
The results from this study are presented as follow.
First, the group bibliotherapy program has significant effects on the improvement of adult woman Christians' self-esteem.
Second, the group bibliotherapy program has significant effects on the improvement of adult woman Christians' quality of life.
Third, the group bibliotherapy program has effects on the improvement of adult woman Christians' spiritual well-being in God.
Fourth, the group bibliotherapy program has significant effects on the improvement of adult woman Christians' spiritual self-esteem in God.
In conclusion, the group bibliotherapy program is proved to be significantly effective in the improvement of adult woman Christians' self-esteem, quality of life, spiritual well-being and spiritual self-esteem. Therefore the group bibliotherapy program can be strongly suggested as a useful means for adult woman Christians' fruitful life.
