Nontraditional nursing students were surveyed using both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the relationships among technological self-efficacy, characteristics of self-directed learning, demographic variables, and satisfaction in a digital learning environment. Relationships that emerged included the positive relationship of increased levels of technological self-efficacy and increased levels of self-directed learning characteristics to increased levels of satisfaction. Students enrolled in online course delivery methods were more satisfied than students enrolled in live interactive courses. Other relationships included students' computer access at home having a positive relationship with satisfaction and with increased levels of technological self-efficacy. Increased levels of proficiency using the World Wide Web were also positively related to increased levels of technological self-efficacy.
The relationships of technological self-efficacy and self-directed learning as being positively related to satisfaction were considered important findings in this research, as educators develop strategies to enhance these skills in this population of students. Additionally, other demographic variables were not significantly related to satisfaction, which supports earlier research that many types of students can be satisfied with courses delivered in the digital learning environment.
