The purpose of this study is to discover the frequency of alcohol dependency groups, alcohol disorder groups and general groups, following the frequency and volume of alcohol consumption of college students. And this study analyze mental health(instability, depression, social inadjustability, and outing frequency) by alcohol dependent groups, alcohol disorder groups and general groups.
The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is a 10-part questionnaire that was developed by the World Health Organization, and it differs with previously developed tools in that it can measure the medical implication of excessive drinking and abusive drinking by adding the volume and frequency of consumed alcohol.
It may be important to diagnose the alcoholic patient to provide appropriate treatment, but it may have much more value to detect early patients who potentially have an alcohol disorder and prevent the further progression of it.
The Korean General Health Questionnaire (KGHQ), developed to evaluate the mental health level of clients, is a measuring stick of mental health for non-psychological medical specialists and is the Korean version of the General Health Questionnaire that is broadly used worldwide.
This study surveyed form september to October. From the 303 total subjects, there were 194 persons (63.6%) of the general group, 76 persons (25.4%) of the alcohol disorder group, and 33 persons (11.0%) of the alcohol dependent group. With regards to gender, men occupied 16.2% of the alcohol dependent group, 32.5% of the alcohol disorder group, and 51.3% of the general group, while women occupied 5.0% of the alcohol dependent group, 18.6% of the alcohol disorder group, and 76.4% of the general group, in that there was a higher alcohol disorder among men.
For general characteristics, the alcohol dependent group per student had higher alcohol disorder in the order of seniors (19.1%), sophomores (12.8%), juniors (10.0%), and freshman (4.9%), and for the alcohol dependent group per age, alcohol disorder was shown in the order of 26 - 30 (17.1%), 21 years or more, 25 years or less (12.4%), and 20 years or less (5.8%).
Analyzing the factors per mental health symptoms following KGHQ-20, in the event of unstable factors, the unstable level was higher in the order of the alcohol dependent group (1.82), alcohol disorder group (1.67), and general group (1.44). For the factor of depression, the degree of depression was higher in the order of the alcohol dependent group (1.63), general group (1.58), and alcohol disorder group (1.35). In social inadaptability, it was higher in the order of the alcohol dependent group (1.77), alcohol disorder group (1.55), and general group (1.25). Outing frequency was higher in the order of the alcohol dependent group (1.64), general group (1.45), and alcohol disorder group (1.28). Concerning the factors of mental health symptoms, unstable factor for P=0.000, depression factor for P=0.000, social inadaptability for P=0.000, and outing frequency for P=0.015, were known.
Based on the research results, the following proposals are hereby presented:
1. A study on the seriousness of the problem through a nationwide dynamic survey on the degree of alcohol disorder of college students, and the development of programs to develop social adaptability through rehabilitation to reduce the unstable factors following the degree of alcohol disorder, and to lower a sense of hopelessness through the program addressing alcohol-related problems of college students.
2. Further research for clarifying the various variables affecting the instability and depression of patients following the degree of alcohol disorder should be forthcoming.
