The purpose of this study are to design geometry activities based on problem solving for five-year-old children and to verify the effects of its application in the kindergarten classroom.
The specific research questions of this study are as follow:
1. What is the design of geometry activities based on problem solving of young children?
2. What are the effects of geometry activities based on problem solving on young children?
1) What are the effects of geometry activities based on problem solving on geometric abilities of young children?
2) What are the behavioral characteristics of young children presented in the process of problem solving?
3. What are the effects of geometry activities based on problem solving of young children on teachers' social interaction and attitudes toward mathematics?
This study consists of two parts: composing geometry activities based on problem solving for young children and their effects on young children and teachers. The results of the study are summarized as follows.
1) The design of geometry activities based on problem solving of young children
The purpose of geometry activities based on problem solving of young children is to improve geometric abilities and mathematical reasoning of young children through problem solving. For this purpose, this paper searches for the attributes of geometry activities based on problem solving and related instructional strategies by reviewing relevant literatures and proceeding studies on geometric development of young children and instructional strategies. In accordance with these instructional strategies, 17 activities including geometric ones for young children were composed.
These activities are designed to help young children understand problems in various problem solving tasks, plan and implement relevant mathematical strategies ,and ultimately solve problems. The geometry activities based on problem solving of young children also enables themselves to organize and utilize various kinds of information that they possessed as the activities stimulated various problem solving strategies and results. Furthermore, the activities emphasize cooperative learning and social interaction in the problem solving process related to geometry.
2) The effects of geometry activities based on problem-solving of young children
To investigate the effects of geometry activities based on problem solving of young children, this study collected data from 107 five-year-old children and four teachers in a Kindergarten and two day care centers. The subjects were divided into two groups: the experimental group and the comparison group, according to young children's socio-economic level and teachers' experiential and educational level. The children in the experimental group were provided geometry activities based on problem solving for 10 weeks. Meanwhile, the children in the comparison group were provided geometry activities utilizing identical instructional materials but the activities were conducted at teachers' own instructional abilities for same period. To find the effects of these activities, the geometric abilities of young children in both groups were statistically measured by carrying out pre- and post-tests. The behavioral characteristics of young children and teachers presented in the problem solving process were quantitatively analyzed, and teachers' attitudes toward mathematics were compared through questionnaires.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the geometry activities based on problem solving of young children apparently contributes to the improvement of their geometric abilities. This result was clearly shown effects in both total scores and sub-scores in the areas of spatial abilities and figural abilities. Especially, the scores on coordinates, visual representation and spatial reasoning that marked low scores in the pre-test were noticeably improved in the post-test. This result indicates that the geometry activities has great effects on spatial reasoning utilizing various spatial cognitive information and coordinate abilities as well as on simple concepts such as location, orientation and course awareness. In addition, the average scores on figurative abilities of the experimental group were improved both in pre- and post-tests. The comparison group showed similar results except for symmetric and transformational variables.
The experimental group showed more improvements in sub-variables of figurative abilities, especially in symmetry and transformation. Symmetric and transformational variables require young children considerable thinking process on geometric attributes in the mental representation. In short, the geometry activities in this study greatly enhanced young children's mathematical reasoning on geometry.
Second, the behaviors of young children in the problem solving process are as follows. In a problem-comprehension stage, young children comprehended problems primarily through understanding mathematical terms and central information. In a planning and implementing stage, they tried to work out familiar strategies and new strategies to solve problems. In a solving and evaluating stage, they reflectly reviewed the process and the results of problem solving, and further proposed a new problem that may have risen from the results. These behaviors were presented more in the experimental group, in the mid and late stages. The children in the experimental group demonstrated more active and positive attitudes toward problem solving as the activities continued. Also, these behaviors were greatly influenced by teachers' instructional strategies and guidance.
Third, teachers' social interaction centralized on leading students to find the differences in the attributes and concept of problems during the problem-comprehension stage. In a problem solving stage, it focused on helping young children to find various problem solving strategies, proposing additional problems to change the current mathematical orientation, facilitating them to organize and generalize their own reasoning, and encouraging them to discuss one another. In particular, certain interactional behaviors including acknowledging, encouraging and praising young children's reasoning were observed throughout problem solving. The teachers in the experimental group led young children to utilize relevant information more actively as the activities proceeded, motivated them to think more innovatively and flexibly, and provided them with more opportunities to monitor their reasoning on their own.
Fourth, the comparison group showed little difference in the scores between the pre-test and post test, while the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in the attitudes toward mathematics after the activities had been conducted. In particular, the scores on self-concept and enjoyment level about mathematics sharply rose.
As demonstrated above, this study investigated behavioral characteristics and concrete instructional strategies concerning young children's geometric problem solving by composing geometry activities based on problem solving for young children and examining the effects of these activities. Furthermore, this study provided important pedagogical implications by verifying the educational effects of geometric activities based on problem solving for young children.
