한국 사설 영어 유치원의 교육과정 분석 연구 = (An) analysis on the curriculums of private English kindergartens in Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to evaluate that the curriculums provided by private English kindergartens are appropriate and efficient for young children by analyzing them. To achieve the purpose, I specify the research questions as follows :First, what is the theoretical background of each English kindergarten curriculum?Second, do the aim and the content of each curriculum correspond with desirable aims and contents of early childhood English education?Third, what are the factors which can cause educational problems from the content and the organization of each curriculum?Fourth, does each curriculum operate efficiently in practice?Fifth, what is the value of education in the methods of evaluation taken by each curriculum? On the basis of the data and research resources from six private English kindergartens, the following areas were examined : theoretical features, aims and goals, contents, textbooks, special programs, sequences of unit and subject, daily schedules, and evaluation.The following conclusions drawn from the analysis and the evaluation are:First, the aims of most curriculums are more focused on improvement of English abilities although all of them have the theoretical background emphasized on the whole development of children as well as natural English acquisition.Second, all curriculums have suitable contents based on speaking and listening for young children, but they also have too many classes focused on written language without regarding a child's developmental stage.Third, young children could be restricted from having enough time for outdoor activities, which are necessary for the development of children, because of long class time and classroom-centered learning. To manage this kind of circumstance, English teachers need to be reeducated to understand the characteristics of young children and learn how to teach their students effectively.Fourth, most kindergartens use various textbooks. In addition, teachers need to make use of authentic materials and apply appropriate teaching methods in the classroom.Fifth, the special programs in each curriculum provide young children with useful cultural experiences including outdoor activities.Sixth, in the case that more than two teachers teach one class, they should have consistent conversation and discussion about their students to operate an integrated curriculum as a whole.Seventh, young children are evaluated on the basis of performance-based assessment by observation. In order to make this evaluation more efficient, it is required to have clear criteria and detailed questions.Eighth, due to the lack of learning Korean and Korean culture in these curriculums, they should include in teaching the respect of our language and culture as well as acquisition of foreign language.In conclusion, the curriculums of private English kindergartens in Korea are focused on learning a foreign language, so they could be effective for the development of English skills. However they cannot be evaluated as integrated curriculums considering the child's developmental stage. As a result, the child's developmental stage and characteristics should be considered first in order to improve the existing early childhood English education system.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구에서는 유아의 새로운 교육기관으로 대두되고 있는 영어 유치원들의 교육과정을 분석해 이러한 과정들이 유아들에게 적합하게 구성 되어있고 실제로 효율적으로 운영되고 있는지 평가해 보는데 그 목적을 두었다. 이러한 목적을 위하여 설정한 연구문제는 첫째, 각 영어 유치원 교육과정이 가지고 있는 이론적 배경을 알아보고, 둘째, 각 영어 유치원 교육과정의 목표 및 내용이 바람직한 조기 영어 교육의 목표와 내용에 부합하는가를 평가해보고, 셋째, 각 영어 유치원 교육과정의 내용 및 수업 구성에서 부적절한 교육적 실제와 문제점을 수반할 수 있는 점들을 발견해 보는 것이며, 넷째, 각 영어 유치원 교육과정이 실제 효율적으로 운영되는지 분석해 보고, 다섯째, 각 영어 유치원에서 평가가 이루어지는 방식을 알아봄으로써 이러한 평가방식이 갖는 교육적 가치를 연구해 보는 것이다.조사 대상으로는 서울에 위치한 6개의 어린이 전문 영어 학원에서 개설한 영어 유치원을 선정하여, 각 영어 유치원의 교육과정이 만들어진 이론적 배경과 목표 및 교육내용, 교육 과정의 실제 운영 및 평가를 조사하였으며, 교육과정의 운영에서는 구체적으로 교재의 사용과 구성, 특별 프로그램, 단원 및 주제의 구성 방법, 하루 일과표 등을 비교, 분석, 평가 하였다.위의 내용에 근거하여 영어 유치원의 교육과정을 분석 연구한 결론은 다음과 같다.첫째, 여섯 곳의 영어 유치원 모두 유아들의 자연스러운 영어의 습득을 강조하고, 이러한 언어의 습득과 함께 유아의 전인적인 발달을 도모하는 이론적 배경으로 설립되었으나 대부분의 영어 유치원들이 외국어 능력의 향상에 보다 초점을 맞춘 교육목표를 가지고 있었다.둘째, 각 영어 유치원의 교육과정은 바람직한 조기영어교육의 내용 중 언어생활의 듣기 영역과 말하기 영역을 충분히 반영하고 있었으나, 유아의 발달특성상 중점적으로 다루어지지 않는 문자언어 영역에 관한 학습도 높은 비율로 이루어지고 있음을 알 수 있었다.셋째, 영어 유치원의 교육과정은 긴 수업시간과 실내 학습 위주로 구성되어 있어서 유아들의 활발한 신체 활동을 제약할 수 있었으며, 영어 교사의 수업 비중이 높아 영어 교사의 아동 교육에 대한 전문성과 재교육이 요구되었다.넷째, 각 유치원마다 다양한 교재를 사용하고 있었는데, 교사는 이러한 교재의 사용과 함께 유아들이 흥미를 느끼고 동기유발을 할 수 있도록 여러 가지 교구와 실물 자료 등을 활용하고, 적절한 교수법을 사용하는 것이 필요하였다.다섯 째, 영어 유치원의 특별 프로그램은 다양한 문화 체험의 기회를 제공하고 바깥놀이가 제한되어 있는 영어 유치원 유아들에게 필요한 경험을 제공하는 역할을 하였다.여섯 째, 두 명 이상의 교사가 유아들을 나누어 지도할 경우, 통합적인 교과과정을 이루기 위해서는 교사들의 유아들에 대한 관심과 지속적인 대화가 요구되었다.일곱 번째, 평가의 공통된 방식으로 사용된 학습 평가서는 수행평가를 근거로 작성되었는데, 구체적이고 분명한 평가기준과 평가문항이 요구되었다.여덟 번째, 한국어 교육과 더불어 우리 문화에 대한 교육이 부족해 우리 언어와 문화에 대해서도 존중심을 갖도록 하는 교육이 병행되어야겠다.결론적으로 현재 우리나라의 영어 유치원 교육과정은 외국어 학습에 초점이 맞추어져 있어 영어 발달 측면에서는 효과적일 수 있으나, 유아의 발달 특성을 고려한 통합적 교육과정으로 평가되기에는 미흡한 점이 많다. 따라서 유아들에게 보다 효율적이고 적절한 영어 교육과정을 구성하기 위해서는 유아의 발달 특성과 발달 단계가 우선적으로 교육과정에 반영되어져야 하겠다.
