This study is designed to measure awareness of customers on their own scalp and hair treatment based on survey, through the theoretical background of scalp physiology field by considering scalp and hair treatment. This is to provide a principal data of scalp and hair treatment for beauty industry. Also, based on awareness of customers, it is to search a direction of basic beauty service in scalp and hair treatment field.
In beauty parlor, dermatology hospital, skin care institute, and scalp institute, 400 survey was performed to customers who lived in North Chula Province and were more than 25 years old. Survey period was performed for ten days from 2005 November 18th to 28th.
All data collected for this study is analyzed by SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science). For analysis method, frequency and percentage is used to draw typical feature of objects. For contents, X@^(2)(Chi-square) verification, frequency analysis, t-test and One-way ANOVA were performed to consider awareness of customers for hair treatment as well as hair character and scalp hair.
In body, scalp hair has dual function for protection and beauty. Also, it has regular and typical characteristics. For the control of hair growth, interaction between epidermis and mesenchymal cell took an important part. Hairy skin with sweat glands cannot be a perfect wall from external germs. Sweat glands and hairs developed under skin comes out of surface. Then, food and air come into the body, and sensory organs such as eyes, a nose, and ears to excrete wastes could be structures for imperfection of skin.
As all germs utilize all these entrances, fair liquid wastes from sweat glands excrete outside of body. Therefore, invaders which try to enter through this way excrete with sweats. hair follicle is more easily infected than sweat gland. Though hair follicle has sebaceous glands that excretes fat for hairs, fat is more sticky and less than sweat. Even insects and ticks as well as bacteria can live in hair follicle. As hair follicle insects found in most eyebrows or beards live on mere wastes from hair follicle, they are not harm enough.
Main reasons for symptoms on scalp hair are various for individuals dependent on bad blood circulation, wrong diet, dirtiness, infection and etc. Therefore, by eliminating microorganism decomposing dirtiness and sebum, circulation ratio for surface keratinization is maintained. Finally, washing frequency is closely connected to dirtiness, which can be the first reason for dandruff. When hair skin is dirty, germs and dandruff increase and itch and smell is caused. There are aerobic coccus, anaerobic bacteria, fungus in hairs. They can be restrained when it is to be always maintained cleanness, wash hair with proper shampoo for individual hair feature, and have a massage with tonic including germicide.
For hair condition, the hair whose live on administrative job was relatively more natural hair while customers who were in service job, production job and technical job category had permanent hair. (χ@^(2)=16.95),
Customers between 25 and 29 perm every 4 months while those between 40 and 44 perm every other months. It seems that age makes difference on frequency.(χ@^(2)=36.42, p<.01). Percentage for customers who has dry scalp was 33%, 22.9% for normal scalp, 21.5% for neutral scalp, 16.3% for oily scalp, and 6.3% for sensitive scalp.
For hair thickness, customers who have normal thickness have normal scalp while cutomers who have thin hair have relatively drier scalp. It seems that hair thickness makes meaningful difference. (χ@^(2)=28.02, p<.001).
For hair damage, as hair gets healthy, scalp is normal while scalp is dry as hair gets thinner. It seems that hair damage makes difference. (χ@^(2)=38.18, p<.001).
For hair loss, as hair loss gets lower, scalp is normal while scalp is oily as hair loss increases. It seems that hair loss makes difference. (χ@^(2)=16.52,p<.05). For sex, men have less trouble in scalp than women and women have more itch and sebum. It seems that sex makes difference. (χ@^(2)=10.78, p<.05).
For hair condition, customers who have natural hair have less trouble on scalp while customers who have dyed, decolorated, and coated hair have less itch symptom and sebum on scalp. It seems that hair condition makes difference. (χ@^(2)=15.95, p<.05).
For hair thickness, cutomers who have normal thickness have less trouble on scalp while customers who have thin hair have sensitive scalp hair. It seems that hair thickness makes difference. (χ@^(2)=44.82, p<.001). For hair damage, customers who have more damaged hair have itch and sebum on scalp while customers who have healthy hair have less trouble on scalp. It seems that hair damage makes difference. (χ@^(2)=26.04, p<.01).
For hair loss, as hair loss gets more, there was itch and sebum on scalp while there was less trouble on scalp as hair loss gets lower. It seems that hair loss makes difference.(χ@^(2)=27.77, p<.01).
For the type of scalp, customers who have normal scalp have less trouble on scalp while customers who have dry skin have more itch and sebum on scalp. It seems that type of scalp makes meaningful difference. (χ@^(2)=75.75, p<.001).
Customers who have not had any hair treatment take part 78.2% and the others, 21.8% have had hair treatment. For hair damage, customers who have more damaged hair have future plan for hair treatment while those who have healthy hair do not have hair treatment plan. It seems that hair damage makes difference.(χ@^(2)=12.80, p<.05).
For the type of scalp, customers who have neutral scalp do not have hair treatment in future while customers who have oily and sensitive scalp have hair treatment. It seems that type of scalp makes difference. (=18.75, p<.01).
For hair treatment, 73.8% of customers recommend beauty parlor for hair treatment, 12.5% for hospital, 7.5% for TV CF, 5% for magazine or book, and 1.3% for internet.
For hair damage, customers who have more damaged hair believe that appropriately used hair product will affect positively on hair health, and, rather than men, women believe that advanced scalp condition will improve hair health. It seems that sex makes meaningful difference. (t=-3.10, p<.01). For age, customers between 40 and 44 years old aware that improved scalp condition will make better hair health than others while those who are older than 45 disagree. It seems that age makes difference. (F=3.41, p<.05).
For sex, compared to women, men believe that scalp and hair will be less related to each other while women believe that scalp and hair will be deeply related to each other. It seems that sex makes difference. (χ@^(2)=8.29, p<.05). As awareness of scalp in accordance with hair condition is resulted from cognitive factor of hair treatment, the degree of customers' awareness could be approximated. In conclusion, scalp and hair are essentially related to each other.
