This study investigates verbs that locative case markers {e}, {ro}, {es?} and {wa} can be alternated with the accusative case marker {r?l} for the identical NP corresponding to internal argument of predicates that have two arguments. In this study, first of all, a list of these verbs is presented and then the conditions and the tendency of restrictions which make case marker alternation possible are examined. Lastly, those verbs are classified by the type of case marker alternation and sub-semantic roles.
In chapter 2, the function of case markers in relation to verbs in Korean is categorized into syntactic and semantic function. While the syntactically accusative case marker {r?l} can be attached to the object of a transitive verb, the complement of a intransitive verb or the adjunct, semantically it has to be considered with respect to ''objectivity''. In particular, the ''objectivity'' of {r?l} has certain degrees corresponding to the type of intransitive/transitive verb.
In chapter 3, since the study supposes that the case marker of the same form in Korean can mark different semantic roles in detail, I classify each sub-semantic role of the arguments to be attached locative case markers {e}, {ro}, {es?} and {wa} and the accusative case marker {r?l} by the type of case marker alternation and the semantic features of the verb and its arguments. Each of them have common and distinct domains of meaning and shows simple or complex alternations in the common domain of meaning. Among locative case markers in Korean, {e} is related to <location> and <theme> respectively, {ro} and {es?} mainly to <location> and {wa} primarily to the [+symmetricality] argument. {r?l}, which has prototypical objectivity, can cover the preceding arguments.
In chapter 4, regarding sub-semantic roles and the type of case marker alternation, verbs capable of locative and accusative case marker alternation are classified and the characteristics and restrictions of each verb group are examined with respect to verbs and two arguments. Particularly in relation to the <location> argument, case alternation is primarily found in movement verbs. They can be classified into goal movement verbs, boundary movement verbs, path movement verbs, escape movement verbs and state movement verbs on the grounds of sub-semantic roles and the type of case marker alternation. Furthermore, related to <theme> argument, attitude verbs, result verbs and mutual symmetry verbs can also be classified among [+activity] intransitive verbs. A small number of [-activity] intransitive verbs can be alternated exceptionally with {r?l} and can be classified into comparative verbs and situative verbs.
In chapter 5, the conditions and restrictions that can make alternation possible with {r?l} are examined corresponding to characteristics of the verb and the noun phrase. Among [+activity] intransitive verbs, verbs that gain external argument with [+volitionality] and [-resultant] in aspect property give the high possibility of alternating to {r?l}. Such locative/accusative marker alternation is restricted according to the aspect characteristics of the verb, the type of complex verb or syntactic and semantic characteristics of the argument.
