    This study is aimed at getting a grip on visual characteristics focused on stream landscapes and the relations between those visual characteristics and preference so as to suggest basic guidelines for a stream landscape master plan for urban streams. This study looks into with what images differences in composition characteristics by form provide stream landscapes after the formation of urban stream landscapes by landscape factors, how those factors affect people's preference, and what determination factors affect the preference. The achievements of this study:
    (1) factors that constitute the visual characteristics of urban stream landscapes were classified into five factors, according to the results of an analysis on the factors. They can be explained to be factor groups―aesthetic, change, artificial, natural and open levels, and the artificial one of them, which expresses psychological responses, obtained the highest estimates, and the open one, which expresses formal features, did the lowest ones.
    (2) The visual characteristics of the 5 factors that were classified in the factor analysis were verified that each adjective variable is differently recognized by section. The most considerable fact is that among the total 26 adjective image variables, 24 ones show average scores on the order of Type5 - Type6 - Type1 - Type4 - Type7 - Type2 - Type3 - Type8.
    (3) In visual measurement, according to the results of measuring 11 physical variables that affect the determination of stream landscape preference, getting averages by type, comparing and analyzing typal measurement, landscapes which have high occupancies of green area rates and open area rates had high preference compared with that of masking rates.
    (4) In typal preference, cases that have both landscape objects and their backgrounds showed high preference, and a prospect on a walking bridge in the flood site for a stream did high preference compared with on a bridge. However, for viewing on a walking bridge, it is good only in the case of having landscape objects, and in the case of the absence of landscape objects, viewing on a bridge has a higher preference.
    (5) After applying ANOVA to correlations between 6 factors that constitute urban stream landscapes and the visual preference, the author obtained the following results.
    Preference= 7.529 -0.289 (sky area) 0.299 + 0.121(open space coverage) 0.326(the surface of the water) +0.153(building coverage) 0.215(revetment vegetation)
    According to the results of comparing the urban stream landscapes of the Musim Stream in the city of Cheonju through visual preference, Type 5 turned out to be the stream landscape with the highest preference.
    Landscape factors that constitute a stream are sky, green area, open space coverage, the surface of the water and revetment vegetation except building coverage, and among them building coverage is the only artificial factor. Type 5 gained high preference estimates, but that resulted from the combination of the harmonization of landscape objects and their surroundings, and sufficient green area rates. Structures on the stream or the architecture as landscape objects cannot be regarded exactly harmonious with the surroundings due to their artificial factors, but if an initial planning considers the harmonization with the surrounding landscape, they could play a role as major factors for stream landscapes. Like the above, with the consideration of the features of natural factors, a specific plan for the harmonization of natural factors and artificial ones should be definitely obtained.
    Given the above facts, the Musim Stream in the city of Cheonju turned out to give a good impression to people, and especially Type 8 showed significant differences in preference because of the absence of landscape objects and their background.
    The reason why the landscape of Musim Stream was recognized as a preferred one is thought that although the area has not been designated as a landscape area, the landscape has been continuously maintained and preserved, and other landscape-hindering factors have been limited to be added.
    It is thought that although the functions of cities are getting professional with complicated appearances, creating a stream landscape with natural factors by limiting the development of certain sections of urban streams like the city of Cheongju could give a good impression to those who visit cities.
