The purpose and necessity of this study is to understand and verify the effect of self-growth group counseling program on elementary school students self-Esteem and school life satisfaction so that the program can be applied to the present education.
The followings are the study objectives to achieve the purpose of this study.
First, what effect does self-growth group counseling have on the self-Esteem of senior elementary school students?
Second, what effect does self-growth group counseling have on the school life of senior elementary school students?
The experiment group consists of 13 sixth grade students from K Elementary School and the control group consists of 13 sixth grade students from I Elementary School, both in Taean-gun, Choungchongnam-do.
The test tool used for self-respect examination is the translated and modified version of Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1967) translated by Kim and Chang (1984) and the confidence level of this test was 0.85.
The test tool used for school life satisfaction examination is the modified version of the examination tool developed by Do (1982) that was used for the attitude test of high school students toward their school which was modified by Son (1993) to be adequate for senior elementary school students. The confidence level of this test was 0.93.
The experiment group had 15 times of 40-minute self-Esteem group counseling. To see the difference between the experiment group and control group, this study used SPSS v.10.1k to conduct ANOVA and t-test for group difference.
The study results are as follows.
First, the experiment group that participated in self-growth group counseling showed significant difference in general self-Esteem, social self-Esteem, and family self-Esteem, the sub-factors of self-Esteem, compared to the situation before their participation.
Second, the experiment group that participated in self-growth group counseling showed significant difference in general feelings toward school life, feelings toward general class factors, and feelings toward interpersonal relationship, the sub-factors of school life satisfaction level, compared to the state before the participation.
Here are some suggestions based on the study results.
First, it is necessary to examine if the result right after the experiment also would persist in the future that looks into the continuity of the group counseling.
Second, there was no distinction between male and female students in this study. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the differences between male and female groups in addition to this mixed gender group.
Third, there should be succeeding studies that focus on lower and middle grade elementary school students since this study only considered sixth grade students.
This study suggests that applying self-growth group counseling have positive effect on children's self-Esteem and school life satisfaction indicating that this program should be adopted by many schools so that the children can improve their interpersonal relationship in effective way, improve their self-Esteem, and have enjoyable school life in this individualized elementary school education environment.
