The purpose of this study was to research the relationship between parental fostering attitude perceived by adolescents and emotional intelligence.
The research questions for achieving the objective of this study are as follows:
First, are there any differences in the parental fostering attitude perceived by adolescents according to their schools, their sexes, education levels of their parents' and whether their parents have a job or not?
Second, are there any differences in adolescents' emotional intelligence according to their schools, their sexes, education levels of their parents' and whether their parents have a job or not?
Third, are there any differences in children's emotional intelligence in accordance with the parental fostering attitude which they perceived?
It executed the questionnaire requesting parental fostering attitude and emotional intelligence as object of 390 middle school and high school students in Jeollabuk-Do. Out of these questionnaires, 381 were collected and used to examine this study.
The parental fostering attitude was measured using the 26 questions in the CRPBI(Schaefer, 1965) which suggested that it could relatively measure parental fostering attitude and the method that Lee Jong-seung and Oh Seong-sim(1982) produced. Emotional intelligence was measured using new measure based on the method Mun Yong-rin(1997) developed.
The results of the study were as follows:
First, the father’s fostering attitude perceived by adolescents according to their schools, showed no statistically significant differences on the whole. In the mother’s fostering attitude perceived by adolescents on the whole, middle school students perceived maternal warmth more than general high school students, and maternal hostility less than general high school students. Middle school students perceived maternal freedom more than vocational high school students, but there were no significant differences in terms of maternal control among all schools. The parental fostering attitude perceived by adolescents according to their sexes, had no differences in both sexes on the whole. The parental fostering attitude perceived by adolescents according to the education levels of their parents’, had no statistically significant differences on the whole. The parental fostering attitude perceived by adolescents according to whether their parents have a job or not, had no significant differences on the whole.
Second, adolescents' emotional intelligence according to their schools, middle school students had higher emotional intelligence than vocational high school students on the whole. According to their sexes, female students had higher emotional intelligence than male students, the higher was parents' education levels, the higher was children's emotional intelligence. According to whether their parents have a job or not, there were no significant differences.
Finally, as a result of analyzing the correlation of parental fostering attitude and children's emotional intelligence, it presented that there was a significant correlation between the parental fostering attitude and children's emotional intelligence, and also a sub-field of children's emotional intelligence. That is, it showed that a higher parental fostering attitude also yielded a higher children's emotional intelligence, as well as a sub-field of children's emotional intelligence.
It can be concluded that parents are needed to perceive the importance of the fostering attitude and they should have affectionate and autonomous fostering attitudes for their children. And it needs various educational data and development of the program.
