Abstract
In this research, I studied correlations between body image and characteristics of personal relationship to provide a foundational work in social adaption for those in adolescent period and to help them pursue both psychological and physical health.
To achieve the goal of this research, we have examined correlations between others' evaluation of bodies and characteristics of personal relationships, and the results, classified by school year, sex, and living places, are as follows.
Firstly, in case one evaluates himself/herself own appearance and body image positively, the correlation between body image and general evaluation of his/her appearance were not found, while there were some correlation between body image and satisfaction with partial areas of his/her body. Secondly, when one evaluates himself/herself negatively, he/she is likely to show higher interest in his/her body and tries harder to look better in both perceptive and behavioral ways.
Thirdly, as others evaluate him/her negatively, characteristics of both roles and expressions were found to be high in personal relationship. Fourthly, in case others evaluate a person' own appearance and body image positively, he/she shows higher characteristics of social relation and friendship among social relationship. Fifthly, those, who have high scores on body/appearance evaluation and perceptive/behavioral characteristics among emotional elements of body images, show higher characteristics of roles, social relations and expression in personal relationship. For this reason, it was found that those, with more sexy and attractive appearances and with faster growth rate, were more likely to show disobedient, distrustful, competitive, and attactive characteristics. Sixthly, correlations between others' evaluation, body images, and characteristics of personal relations show different results depending on grades, sex, and living areas.
According to grades, as grades go up, children's satisfaction with certain parts of their bodies and body images decrease, while cognitive and behavioral fields increase. And characteristics or roles and expression in personal relations increased, while social relations decreased. For example, middle school students show more negative attitudes toward others' evaluation of their bodies, associated with strong characteristics of competitiveness-aggressiveness and disobedience-distrust, etc., compared to elementary school students.
As for living areas, students living in Seoul react more negatively about others' evaluation and show stronger tendencies of disobedience and distrust in personal relations, compared to those living in local areas.
Depending on sex difference, girls show lower satisfaction with their body images, however higher degrees in cognitive and behavioral characteristics.
In other words, compared to a male student in 5th grade, elementary school, a female student in 2nd grade, middle school, is more reluctant in accepting others' evaluation and also show lower satisfaction with her body, while paying more nerves on others attention. This happens more often in Seoul than local areas.
According to the research, others' positive evaluation on one's body image during his/her adolescent period played an important role in subjective image-making of his/her body. Children showed different characteristics of personal relationship depending on his/her own body images. Finally, the research result shows necessity that children and teenagers to make desirable and affirmative body images for healthy and satisfactory personal relationships.
