    본 연구의 목적은 소집단 과학 활동이 유아의 창의성과 언어능력에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 알아보고자 하는데 있다.
    위와 같은 목적을 위해 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다.
    1. 소집단 과학 활동이 유아의 창의성에 영향을 미치는가?
    2. 소집단 과학 활동이 유아의 언어능력에 영향을 미치는가?
    본 연구의 대상은 대구광역시 소재한 K유치원 만 5세 유아 40명으로 실험집단 20명과 통제집단 20명으로 구성하였다. 본 연구에서는 유아의 창의성을 측정하기 위해 Torrance(1974)가 제작한 창의적 사고력 검사(Torrance Test of Creative Thingking:TTCT)를 사용하였다. 유아의 언어능력을 측정하기 위해서 장영애(1981)가 제작한 것을 박영수(1997)가 4~6세아 수준에 맞게 수정?보완한 검사 도구를 사용하였다. 이 검사는 어휘력, 언어이해력, 언어표현력의 세부분으로 구성되어 있다. 본 연구는 실험집단과 통제집단으로 나누어 주 2회씩 총 20회의 실험으로 이루어졌다. 실험집단은 5명씩 4개의 소집단으로 나누어 소집단 과학 활동 프로그램을 실시하였고, 통제집단은 대집단 과학 활동 프로그램을 실시하였다. 본 연구에서의 자료분석 방법은 SPSS 10.0프로그램을 사용하여 두 집단의 창의성과 언어능력의 사전검사 점수를 공변인으로 한 공변량분석(ANCOVA)을 실시하였다.
    본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다.
    첫째, 소집단 과학 활동을 한 실험집단은 통제집단에 비해 창의성 증진에 효과가 있었다. 또한 창의성의 하위요소인 유창성, 독창성, 추상성, 정교성, 저항성 모두 증진되는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
    둘재, 소집단 과학 활동을 한 실험집단은 통제집단에 비해 언어능력 전체 증진에 효과가 있었다. 또한 언어능력의 하위요소인 어휘력, 언어이해, 언어표현 모두 증진되는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
    본 연구의 결과를 토대로 다음과 같은 결론을 내릴 수 있다.
    첫째, 소집단 과학 활동은 창의성 증진에 효과가 있었다. 이는 소집단으로 활동에 참여한 유아들이 저마다 다른 방법으로 탐색하고 새로운 아이디어를 많이 생각해 내어 유아들의 창의성을 발달시킬 수 있다고 할 수 있다.
    둘째, 소집단 과학 활동을 한 실험집단은 통제집단에 비해 언어능력 전체 증진에 효과가 있었다. 이는 자발적으로 자신의 의견을 표현할 수 있는 기회가 제공되어져 언어적 상호작용과 문제해결 과정을 경험하게 됨으로 유아의 언어능력을 발달시킬 수 있다고 할 수 있다.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate how the small group scientific activities have an effect on young children's creativity and verbal abilities. For the purpose, following research questions were set up ;
    First, have the small group scientific activities effects on young children's creativities?
    Second, have the small group scientific activity effects on young children's verbal abilities?
    The subjects of this study wave 40 5 years old of K kindergarten in Daegu metropolitan city. They were divided into 20 children of experimental group and 20 children of control group. To measure young children's creativities were Torrance(1974)'s 'Torrance Test of Creative Thinking; TTCT'. To measure young children's verbal abilities were Yeong-Su Bak(1997)??s young children's verbal ability test. This tool is composed of vocabulary ability, verbal understanding ability and verbal expression ability.
    The experimental and the control group participated in program 2 times a week, total 20 times for 10 weeks. The experimental group was subdivided into 4 small groups with 5 persons each and participated in scientific discussion activity program. The control group participated in the big group scientific activity program. Data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 program and ANCOVA was carried out with co-variable, which was the score of pre-test for two groups' creativity and verbal ability.
    Followings are the results of the study ;
    First, the experimental group participated in the small group scientific activities showed better improvement in creativities than the control group. All of the sub-elements in creativity, which are fluency, originality, abstractness, elaborateness and resistance, are all improved.
    Second, the experimental group participated in the small group scientific activities showed better improvements in the total verbal abilities than the control group. All of the sub-elements of verbal abilities, which are vocabulary ability, verbal understanding and verbal expression, are all improved.
    Followings are the conclusion of this study ;
    First, small group scientific activities are effective in improving creativity. Each of the young children participating in the small group scientific activities inquired in original ways and thought out lots of new ideas.
    Second, the experimental group participated in small group scientific activities showed better improvements in total verbal ability than the control group. The verbal ability of young children seemed to be developed since they can experience the verbal interaction and problem solving process with the opportunity to express their opinion spontaneously given to them.
