Background : Most migrant workers in Korea can't receive proper medical service and are worried about their health. So this study aims to investigate the health status of the migrant workers and to search for the method to improve their health and the effect of local public health.
Methods : The 1,243 migrant workers who visited a clinic for migrant workers in Daegu from June 2001 to July 2004, were questionnaired for the personal characteristics and 694 of them were undergone health examination. Also, we classified the medical records of the 1,022 migrant workers.
Results : There were 20 nations and 1,243 migrant workers, 897 men (72.2%) and 346 women(27.8%), among of them. As for kind of work, manufacturing was 93%, average income was 708,900 won and average working hours was 10.35 hours per day. As for their residence, those who below 2 years were 57.9%, 84.3% of responders didn't have insurance. 42 persons(6.1%) seemed have the hypertension, 1 person(0.1%), 27 persons (3.9%) a hypercholesterolemia, 91 persons(13.1%) a liver disease, 45 persons (6.5%) a diabetes, 20 persons(2.9%) a kidney disease. Classified according to system, the musculoskeletal(31.6%), digestive(20.9%), respiratory (16.9%) and dermatological(3.6%) symptoms were common.
Conclusions : It is necessary to further study up the checkup item to investigate the health status of migrant workers because improvement of migrant worker’s health status and medical environment seems to have the effect on quality of daily life and the efficacy of working production.
