The purpose of this study was to develop and test the structural model that explains husband and wife compatibility and family health of middle-aged.
A hypothetical model explaining husband and wife compatibility and family health based on literature reviews.
There were six theoretical variables and twelve measurement variables in hypothetical model. The exogenous variables included in the model were self-esteem and differentiation of self. The endogenous variables were communication, sex role attitude, husband and wife compatibility, family health.
The twelve measurement variables were self-esteem, cognitive versus emotional process, family projection process, emotional cutoff, communication, sex role attitude, self compatibility, spouse compatibility, common compatibility, family self-concept, family health care and physiologic function.
Data collection was carried out May through July 2005. Data were collected by self-reporting questionnaires from 373 middle-aged couples who lived in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Kyungnam, Kyungpook.
The collected data were analyzed with covariance structure analysis using SPSS and LISREL program.
SPSS program was used for descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. LISREL program was used to find the best fit normal which assumes causal relationship among variables.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. The fitness indices of the hypothetical model were Goodness of Fit Index 0.92, Non Normed Fit Index 0.96, Parsimony Normed Fit Index 0.67. Therefore, this model was to be good fitting to the data and to be parsimonious.
2. The fitness indices of the modified model were Goodness of Fit Index 0.94, Non Normed Fit Index 0.97, Parsimony Normed Fit Index 0.74.
3. Self-esteem, differentiation of self, communication have significant effects on husband and wife compatibility. Of these variables, communication was the most significant factor. These predictive variables of husband and wife compatibility explained 84% of variance.
4. Differentiation of self, husband and wife compatibility have significant effects on family health. Of these variables, husband and wife compatibility was the most significant factor. These predictive variables of family health explained 81% of variance.
