This study is to develop educational program on the servant leadership for early childhood children and to demonstrate its effects. The leader with servant leadership exercises his/her leadership by serving the members of the group and, therefore, the servant leadership is appropriate and required in these modern days which put emphasis on the individuality and the diversity. The program is developed for the purpose of educating these quality to the early childhood children who are building up the basis of their respective personalities.
In developing the program for this study, educational contents and specific activities are designed on the basis of conducts abstracted from the concepts of servant leadership, which is consisted of conceptualization, value people, support for people to grow, and building community as high factors, and goal setting, respect, caring, listening, sharing leadership, support, encouragement, persuasion and cooperation as sub factors based on the high factors from reviewing numbers of existing literatures and validity check processes by field experts. 12 sessions program has been prepared through the preliminary research and revision after selecting the contents and making the activities based on the foregoing factors. In addition, the standards for the testing tools and contents analysis have been developed in order to test the effects of the program.
In order to verify the effects of the developed program, pre/post test control group design is applied. The subjects are 31 five-year old children in preschool in Seongnam City, who are divided into two groups as test group and control group of which test group of 15 children is engaged in the educational program on the servant leadership and the other group of 16 children as control group are engaged in general education. The testification of the effect of this study has been taken by observing the parents and the teachers before the commencement of the educational program on the servant leadership, during the program, and after the program.
The results of the study are as follows;
First, the test group in the educational program on the servant leadership shows higher average scores than those of the control group with respect to parents and teachers, which means that the program is meaningful in the difference of the test group and the control group statistically. The sub factors of the conducts for the program are also meaningful in the difference of two groups except for a sub factor 'sharing leadership'.
Secondly, the result shows that the average scores of the servant leadership after the program is higher than those before the program with respect to parents and teachers, of which difference is meaningful statistically in each sub factors.
Finally, the levels of servant leadership of subjects are progressive positively through the activities of the program by sessions even though each children on this study shows deviation.
The educational program on the servant leadership contributed to the promoting the servant leadership for early childhood children.
This study pursues developing the educational program on the servant leadership, applying the program to early childhood children, and testifying the effects of the program. The contents of the program are taken from constructs of servant leadership factors, on which specific activities of the program are organized. In order to prove the effectiveness of the educational program on the servant leadership, the test tool and the standard of analysis of this study are developed, by which the servant leadership behavior of the subjects are observed. The most meaningful performance of this study is to offer the probe that the servant leadership, respecting other people and caring people can be progressed in early childhood and that this study is helpful for further studies based on this study.
