In modern society, it is emphasized for the elderly to establish sound self-identification and improve their psychological well-being. The main goal of this policy is to enlarge elderly job performance. It is because elderly people's job performance is not only an effective for realizing elderly welfare but also an efficient scheme for improving national competitive power. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide some provable data about how people prepare for elderly people's job performance and its activation.
The samples of this study are 300 male and female elderly people who are over the age of 60, live in Seoul and participate in job performance. The method of sampling is purposive sampling which extract and assign them according to their occupations and gender. Statistical analysis is carried out using SPSS/Win Ver 12.0 and LISREL 8.0.
The findings of this study are as follows:
Firstly, elderly people have a strong desire about employment stability. It is possible to see that elderly people want to carry out the job performance and participate in productive activities which make some profits even in their old age. Compared with the past, the average life span increased and education levels became higher so that elderly people would like to live not only as simple creatures but as utilizable resources in their society. Therefore, it is more appropriate to approach the policy about elderly people's participation in job performance and utilization of human resources as long-term and comprehensive elderly welfare policies rather than one of labor policies. Also, elderly people's job performance will be an efficient device to reduce family members' charge for supporting elderly people. In the view of this, elderly people's participation in job performance is a useful device for both elderly welfare and family welfare.
Secondly, subjects' lack of knowledge about the job environment suggests many things. Actually, elderly people lack knowledge about how to get some information about jobs and approach the job field which they would like to get. In order to solve this problem and improve elderly people's job performance, it will be useful for them to receive education related to this so that they could get some information by themselves and learn utilizable methods. In this point of view, a life planning education program for the elderly will considerably have an influence on providing some information about job environment and some utilizable methods.
In addition, subjects suggest that it is necessary to raise the social recognition about elderly people's participation in job performance and to have an environment that is available for activation of job performance. Also, subjects show a strong desire about attaining more information about jobs. It is shown that it is necessary to advertise some information about these strategies which can satisfy elderly people's high desire about job performance. The information about jobs that governments and some organizations related to elderly people's job performance will link the elderly who are motivated to participate in job performance and some organizations which hire the elderly. As a result, elderly people can participate in job performance actively.
Thirdly, as a result of proving the causal model among elderly people's job performance, motivation for the participation, job satisfaction and psychological well-being is proved that it is simply influenced by some factors from the elderly people's family and job environments. It is found that family members are elderly people's powerful supporters and they also affect the elderly people's choice for job performance and their actual job performance. Therefore, we are expecting that the elderly people's active job performance will be performed when their family members recognize the elderly to be valuable social resources and keep supporting the elderly to participate in job performance.
It is found that elderly people's motivation for participation in job performance and job satisfaction are influenced by the level of job environments. Job environments at present will have to be improved in order to achieve the elderly people's active job performance. However, their job environments are still in a poor situation. The government will have to be concerned about the improvement of the elderly people's job environments. For instance, the government has to sort out and suggest some occupations which hire full time elderly workers regularly when they develop appropriate jobs and present some policies for the improvement of elderly people's job environments.
In addition, it is found that elderly people's psychological well-being is affected by job satisfaction. Elderly people's participation in job performance will contribute to their psychological well-being and successful aging. In terms of these results, elderly people's active participation in job performance is very useful as preparation for the aged society. Therefore, the government will have to promote the policy which gives the elderly opportunities to work and extend their working period in order to ensure their psychological well-being.
