This study was conducted to the level of the work stress, hardiness, and burnout of intensive care unit nurses and performed by the purpose of the basic data on contrivance to the qualitative improvement of nursing work achievement.
The data was obtained from 129 intensive care unit nurses at the two general hospitals of C National University located in the G City and the H Country through the question examination from June 20 to July 5, 2005.
For this study, three instruments were used.
The work stress of the object of this study was measured by the instrument of modification supplement by Kim (2003) and development by the Kim and Gu (1984), and the hardiness measurement was used by the instrument of modification supplement by Ham (1996) and development by Kobasa, Maddi, and Kahn (1982), and then the level of the burnout was measured by the used of question form of modification supplement by Hong (1984) and of development by Pines, Aronson, and Kafry (1981).
The general property of the object of this study was standed for a real number and percentage, and the level of the work stress, hardiness, and burnout was analyzed by the minimum value, the maximum value, the average, and the standard deviation. The data was analyzed by SPSS PC+ 12.0 for Windows using description analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. The level of the work stress in ICU nurses was 3.70 in the average. The highest stress level was nursing behavior and work area (3.76), and was followed by personal relations area (3.70), the nursing organization and administration (3.64), and the nursing environment area (3.60).
2. The hardiness level of the subject was 2.93 in the average. The highest was control (3.16), the second was challenge (3.07) and commitment (2.69).
3. The level of burnout was 2.40 in the average and the highest was physical burnout area (2.54), the second was mental burnout area(2.35), the emotional burnout area (2.34).
4. The work stress was related to age (F=3.38, p= .021), work position (t=-2.72, p= .007). The level of burnout was related to age (F=5.63, p= .001), work position (t=-2.17, p= .032), work satisfaction (F=22.84, p< .001).
5. Work stress showed positive correlation with the level of burnout (r= .252, p= .004) and there was negative correlation between hardiness and burnout (r=- .231, p= .008).
6. The level of burnout was analyzed for the work stress and the hardiness. In the group with the high level of work stress, the high level of hardiness showed a significantly low level of burnout than that of the low level of hardiness (t=-2.60, p= .012). In the group with the low level of hardiness, the low level of work stress showed a significantly low level of burnout than that of the high level of work stress (t=3.51, p= .001).
In conclusion, it showed that ICU nurses was under so much stress in the nursing behavior, the work area, the personal relationship and as it is the high work stress and the low hardiness of ICU nurses, so it is large correlation with the degree of burnout. Especially, there was high level of burnout in the group of low hardiness and high work stress, and there was low level of burnout in the group of high hardiness and low work stress. For this reason, it is regarded with the need of the individual effort and the nursing administration support for the reduction of the work stress and the burnout level of ICU nurses.
