The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of English knowledge, Korean reading ability, and reading anxiety on the cognitive process of English reading of Korean students. As proposed by Cummins (1979, 1984), cognitive and literacy skills established in L1 transfer across languages. According to the linguistic threshold hypothesis, however, a given amount of L2 linguistic knowledge is necessary in order to engage L1 reading ability. A lack of L2 knowledge short-circuits the L1 reading skills, blocking their transfer to L2. In the EFL context, reading anxiety may also interfere with the cognitive process of reading. L2 reading is riskier and more complex than the L1 reading process, which limits cognitive capacity to be invested in the reading task itself. Anxiety may short-circuit the automatization of linguistic knowledge and transfer of L1 reading skills while the construction of meaning is occurring inside the reader.
This study attempts to answer three questions. (A) How do English knowledge, Korean reading ability, and reading anxiety affect English reading? (B) Do the effects of these variables differ according to the students' level of reading proficiency? Do the results show the linguistic threshold level of reading in English? (C) How does foreign language reading anxiety affect the English reading process?
The selected group for this research comprises 272 students in grades 9 and 10 from Gwangju, Korea. Using multiple regression analysis, this study shows that L2 knowledge, L1 reading ability, and reading anxiety are all significant predictors of reading proficiency, and that the relative importance of these three variables differs from one reading proficiency group to another. In the advanced group, L2 grammar and L1 reading are significant predictors of reading proficiency, while vocabulary knowledge is significant for intermediate students. None of the variables are significant for the lowest group. This result indicates that advanced students have reached the threshold level of linguistic proficiency needed to read the given text in L2. Vocabulary knowledge is primarily required for successful reading but shows 'ceiling effects' on reading proficiency. This study also reveals that anxiety serves as a mediator in the cognitive process of L2 reading, which indicates that anxiety may interfere with the automatization of L2 knowledge and transfer of L1 reading ability to L2 reading in the process of meaning construction from the text. This study has pedagogical implications for teachers and students of English in that vocabulary and grammar are fundamental to successful reading and the cognitive process of reading may be short-circuited by affective factors, such as foreign language reading anxiety.
