This study aims at examining the details of the existing instruction in art appreciation to provide a correct understanding of how important appreciation in art education is for young children and at researching and analyzing teachers' understandings and practices at institutions for early childhood education to suggest how to improve their art appreciation guidance more efficiently.
For this purpose, this study set the following questions.
1. What does a teacher think of art appreciation guidance at an institution for early childhood education and how are the guidance performed there?
2. Do teachers' general backgrounds―types of institutions for early childhood education, teachers' career, children's age―make any difference in their understandings and practices of young children's art appreciation guidance?
3. What is a desirable plan to solve problems revealed by a research on practices of art appreciation guidance?
A survey was conducted with 400 teachers at kindergartens and child care centers in Gyeongbuk province.
The questionnaire was my revision and complement for the purpose of this study in reference to the questionnaire in the Research on Educational Practices of Art Appreciation in Kindergartens by Kim (2000) and the Study on Teachers' Understandings and Practices of Instruction for Young Children in Art Appreciation by Lee (2001); the SPSS WIN 12.0 program was used to determine the distribution of responses in the data collected and then the chi-square test was carried out. The frequency analysis was made for the results and one-way ANOVA was used to examine differences in teachers' understandings by their backgrounds.
The results can be summarized as follows:
First, in terms of teachers' understandings of instruction in art appreciation at an institution for early childhood education, 85.1 percent of the respondents were found to be aware of goals and details of art education for young children. What they gave the first priority to as a goal of art education for young children was to 'have interests in a variety of artistic works' and they also gave similar priority to other items. As for understandings of the need of education in art appreciation, 62.3 percent of the teachers were aware that art appreciation guidance were necessary and 57.8 percent were positively aware that experiences in art appreciation during early childhood were also useful in pursuing beauty during adulthood and served to improve the ability to give aesthetic expression.
Second, in terms of practices for young children's art appreciation guidance, When asked if there was any place for education in art appreciation within a community, 55.3 percent answered that there was no such place, which implies a lack of places to provide young children with education in appreciation. Field education was most likely to be provided approximately once a year, implying that there was little field education for young children in art appreciation, compared with the education in art appreciation provided approximately once a week. As for reasons why there was little instruction in art appreciation, it was most likely to be because of insufficient materials or plans for the guidance (37.8%), implying that materials and plans were seriously insufficient for art appreciation guidance. And many teachers (34.1%) answered that there were insufficient teaching methods and poor understandings, which suggests the need of training or education in how to instruct children in art appreciation, along with the lack of plans for guidance; the first priority was given to drawing, followed by searching, decorating, manufacturing, and appreciating among artistic guidance. As instructional media for art appreciation, children's works (73.6%) were most frequently used for instruction in appreciation, followed by photos, prints, collections of masterpieces, teaching materials of copies, computer-based materials, field trips to museums, moving pictures by VTR, and OHP, filmstrips of artistic works.
Third, as for differences in understandings of education for young children in art appreciation by backgrounds, there was no great difference by teachers' career but were significant differences by age of children concerned. As for teachers' career, the lower career teachers had, the more likely they were to aware that art appreciation served to improve the ability to give aesthetic expression; in terms of the institutional type, public kindergarten teachers, particularly those in charge of a class for five-year-olds, were more likely to be aware of the need of instruction in art appreciation.
Fourth, as for issues of instruction in art appreciation to improve education for young children in art appreciation, the most urgent was found to be a change of teachers' understandings of how important education in art appreciation was; the most necessary issue for effective teaching-learning of art appreciation guidance was formation of environment in a community for various experiences (26.3%), followed by design and development of teaching materials necessary for art appreciation guidance (24.6%), and reeducation for teachers to manage the art appreciation guidance effectively (20.9%), development of programs to enable teacher to improve the ability to instruct children in art appreciation (19.1%),
