As industrialization and urbanization are speeded up recently, mental and physical stress of the community members is building up more and more. Meanwhile, accelerating automation and mechanization have been causing lack of exercise although they have provided convenience and quality improvement of life on the other hand. The object of this study, therefore, is to provide academic basic materials on the growing number of yoga participants, who are doing it in an effort to prevent and overcome those problems above, and to pursue fundamental life, as well as on life style to build up health.
To achieve those goals, this study conducted a survey of 200 members of yoga clubs located in Seoul as of 2005 to clarify the relation of the commitment of Yoga participants and their life style to build up health.
As a result of the statistical analysis and discussions, we drew conclusions as follows:
First, as for the commitment of Yoga participants in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, the level of cognitive commitment and behavioral commitment of certain professional careers and service industries were relatively high, compared to those of students, other professional careers, office workers, sport related industries, and housewives. And in the case of income brackets between 1,000,000 and 2,000,000 won, the level of behavioral commitment was the highest. Gender, age, and how long they have been doing Yoga turned out to have no effect on them, on the other hand.
Second, it was revealed that the higher cognitive and behavioral commitment were, the higher their self-realization level was.
Third, the higher behavioral commitment was, the higher their health responsibility was.
Fourth, the higher cognitive commitment was, the better their exercise and nutrition were.
Fifth, the higher behavioral commitment was, the better their personal relationships were.
Sixth, the higher behavioral commitment was, the better their stress management was.
In conclusion, it was revealed that the commitment of Yoga participants in terms of socio-demographic characteristics was affected by their occupation types and income brackets, and that the commitment of Yoga participants has effect on their general life styles to build up health.
The findings gained from these procedures and contexts are expected to improve efficiency to large extent in academic and practical areas. Especially, since it was clarified that the commitment of Yoga participants has good effect on life styles to build up health in general, it is thought that related collateral studies as well as the succeeding investigation of this study should follow.
