The purpose of this study is to show how the 3rd graders at middle school understand the definition of function that they already learnt at school and to find out what the misconception that students obtain about the definition of function in the expression of functional graph and algebra. Also, it suggests the difference in the ability of solving problems according to the expression method by investigating and analyzing after presenting the quadratic function as a form on graphical table and symbolic table.
The following questions of the study were set for this purpose:
1. What is the definition of function, which the 3rd years at middle school recognize?
2. Is there difference between expressions of algebraic and graphic when they distinguish function?
3. What is the misconception about quadratic function appearing in the process of problem solving of quadratic function of the 3rd years?
4. Does the ability of students of problem solving differ as the expression changes?
The qualitative research method was used on 5 students to perform the study by interviewing them before they solve the questions.
The testing tools were discussed and revised with teachers at school by developing quadratic testing sheet, which was referred to the previous studies and curriculums and function concept sheet was formed, which was referred to the previous studies and questions that was developed by Schwingendorf, K., Hawks, J. & Beineke, J. (1992) who presented the report of the study to the investigation series of concept research on function on MAA (Mathematical Association of America).
The result of the study tells that students tend to see the definition of function as systematic rule or equations and they think the function should be expressed by one certain rule or equation. Also, they think the functional graph should be systematic.
