The objective of my research to discover the effects, if any, of the anger management program on aggression and self-esteem of students at elementary schools. To achieve the mentioned purpose, I had set up the following hypotheses;
1.The anger management program will decrease the children's aggression.
2. The anger management program will increase the children's self-esteem.
In order the test the hypotheses, 144 students from 4 classes of 6th grade from S Elementary School in Seoul were selected as samples;2 classes of 73 children as the experimental group and the other 2 classes of 71 children as the control group.
The program used in my experiment is based on the Anger Management Program of Cognition-Emotion-Action Integration originally developed by Kim, Yong Tae et al., (1995), later revised by Kim, Soon Ok (2001), Lee, Seung Hee (2002) and Heo Eun Soon (2003).
The program was given a total of 10 times to the experimental group, each session lasting about 60 minutes, once and twice a week.
In measuring the results, I used two different inventories for each hypothesis; the inventory developed by Buss & Durkee (1957, translated by Moon, Jae Kyoung in 1998 into Korean) for measuring aggression and Coopersmith's Measure (1967, revised by Choi, Yoon Hee in 1993 for use in Korea) for self-esteem.
T-test using SPSS 11.5 was conducted for data analysis. I compared the differences in aggression and self-esteem of the experimental and control groups between and after the program treatment.
The experiment showed the following results.
First, the anger management program was not effective in reducing the aggression of the children itself but was effective in controlling it. After being treated with anger management program, the experimental group showed no insignificant decrease in aggression where by contrast, the control group which was not treated with the program showed significant increase of aggression. I can conclude that the program was eff
