This study investigated the effects of differing teaching methods using storytelling on the vocabulary ability of elementary school students of primary, intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels.
The three research question were: First, what effects do differentiated teaching methods using storytelling have on the reading vocabulary ability of elementary school students of primary, intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels?
Second, what effects do differentiated teaching methods using storytelling have on the writing vocabulary ability of elementary school students of primary, intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels?
Third, what effects do differentiated teaching methods using storytelling have on interest in English study of elementary school students of primary, intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels?
The subjects were seventy sixth graders from two classes at an elementary school in a city. The subjects were categorized into primary, intermediate, and advanced groups according to academic ability.
The following are the main findings: First, it was found that significant differences existed between and among the groups in terms of ability in vocabulary and interest. Especially, for the primary and intermediate groups, the subjects' levels of interest increased.
Second, most of the students participated in the various activities with a high degree of motivation and interest after listening to the English storybook. In addition, they had more confidence and a higher ability in vocabulary.
Based on the findings, the following suggestions are offered regarding elementary school EFL education:
It is suggested that the introduction of more storybooks and more storytelling be initiated throughout the EFL curriculum. The use of enriched and supplementary differentiated activity materials can induce self-motivated learning in the better students. It can also induce students with lesser abilities to try activities according to their proficiency level by providing them with supplementary courses, and by reducing anxiety levels. Various techniques and materials should be developed.
