Seokin(石人) is a type of stonework placed in front of a tomb that has an image of a man, and it is divided into two types. One is Mooninseok(文人石), a figure of a civil official wearing an official hat and a belt and holding a mace. The other is Mooinseok, a figure of an armored warrior with a sword.
This study aimed to examine Mooninseok distributed in Wonju area, to distinguish its characteristics chronologically, and to estimate a definite period of each Mooninseok.
As a result of examining Mooninseok in Wonju area, it was identified that there are 244 Mooninseoks of 122 tombs. By analysing 116 Mooninseoks from 58 tombs that had periods of production stated, it appeared that there are 2 tombs from the 15th century, 3 tombs from the 16th century, 29 tombs from the 17th century, 19 tombs from the 18th century, 5 tombs from the 19th century.
The average height of 224 Mooninseoks is 164cm. The average heights of Mooninseoks in chronological order are as follows;
221cm from 1400 to 1500, 182cm from 1501 to 1600, 170cm from 1601 to 1650, 160cm from 1651 to 1700, 160cm from 1701 to 1750, 162cm from 1751 to 1800, and 150cm from 1801 to 1900. From this, it is inferred that the earlier Mooninseoks are higher than the later ones in general. Besides, it is suggested that higher Poomgye(official position. 品階) has higher Mooninseok. For instance, Jung 1 poom was 174cm, 183cm for Jung 2 poom, 167cm for Jung 3 poom dangsang, and 158cm for Jung 3 poom dangha.
Mooninseoks in the 15th century had the primitive figure of Mooninseok in the Chosun era, and the figure had Bokdugongbok(幞頭公服), an official outfit with an official hat and a belt. A whole figure had a round shape, and its eye were the same shape as Jangseung's, a devil post.
Mooninseoks in the 16th century continued to have Bokdugongbok in early century, but Geumkwanjobok(金冠朝服), a golden court suit, appeared in the late century.
The most Mooninseoks were set up in Wonju area in the 17th century. Among these, only four Mooninseoks had shapes of Bokdugongbok, and the rest had a shape of Geumkwanjobok. They were carved deeply, and their faces were simply described.
In the 18th century, they were described realistically, and they showed proper proportion, a three-dimensional effect, fancy patterns, and fine technique.
Based on these features, it was estimated that a Mooninseok located near Jangyang elementary school was set up before the year 1500, and that it was the earliest one. Hong's tomb in Bongsan-dong was supposed to set up in mid-1500s.
It was not possible to compare with other areas because there are not any studies on Mooninseoks of the gentry so far. Therefore, it is suggested that further studies about other areas need to be done so that it could be possible to investigate extensively and to compare to Mooninseoks from various areas.
