School violence occurs increasingly among lower-age groups in more inhuman ways. It also occurs, regardless of time and places, and has diverse types and shrewder means. Thus, this study set the following hypotheses to examine the actual condition of school violence among middle school students and to identify and cope with effects on school violence by relevant factors.
Hypothesis 1. There are differences in experiences suffering from school violence among middle school students by groups (coeducational, boys', girls' schools).
Hypothesis 2. There are differences in experiences committing school violence among middle school students by groups (coeducational, boys', girls' schools).
Hypothesis 3. There are differences in factors affecting school violence among middle school students between coeducational schools and non-coeducational ones.
3-1 There are differences in the factor of school environment between coeducational schools and non-coeducational ones.
3-2 There are differences in the factor of peer group between coeducational schools and non-coeducational ones.
A survey was conducted for the actual condition and factors of school violence with 659 students from six middle schools in Wonju. As for data analysis, frequency and percentage were estimated to see general properties, along with t-test, one-way ANOVA, and chi-square (χ2) test to consider experiences suffering from and committing school violence among middle school students. In addition, regression was carried out to see effects of the factors of school environment and peer group on experiences suffering from and committing school violence among middle school students. The results from the analysis can be summarized as follows:
First, in terms of experiences suffering from school violence by school types, students in a coeducational middle school had more experiences suffering from harassment than those in non-coeducational one and students in a boys' school had more experiences suffering from linguistic, physical, and school violence than those in coeducational or girls' one.
Second, in terms of experiences committing school violence by school types, students in a coeducational or boys' school had more experiences committing harassment than those in girls' one and students in a boys' school had more experiences committing psychological, linguistic, physical, and school violence than those in coeducational or girls' one.
Third, in terms of effects of the factor of school environment on experiences suffering from school violence, school environment and peer relationship had statistically significant effects on experiences suffering from school violence but school adaptation had no such statistically significant effect among both coeducational and non-coeducational school students. Peer relationship had greater effects on experiences suffering from school violence than school environment did. Therefore, the better school environment and peer relationship middle school students had, the less school violence they suffered from.
Fourth, in terms of effects of the factor of school environment on experiences committing school violence, school environment had statistically significant effects on experiences committing school violence but teacher and peer relationship, academic factor, and school adaptation had no such statistically significant effect among both coeducational and non-coeducational school students. Therefore, the better school environment middle school students had, the less school violence they committed.
Fifth, in terms of effects of the factor of peer group on experiences suffering from and committing school violence, the higher peer misbehavior resulted in more experiences committing school violence among both coeducational and non-coeducational school students.
To put the results together, there were insignificant differences in the actual condition of violence between coeducational schools and non-coeducational ones and peer relationship, school environment, and peer group had great effects on school violence. In order to provide fundamental prevention and treatment of school violence, it is therefore necessary for home to correct teenagers' wrong needs, for society to control their reckless impulse, and for home, school, and society all to create general atmosphere which can help them realize their talent and abilities to restore socially and personally moral humanity.
