The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and career-maturity in elementary school students.
The hypotheses of the study were as follows :
First, there will be a significant difference in self-efficacy and career-maturity level by grade and gender?
Second, there will be a significant difference in self-efficacy and career-maturity level by social and economical status of parents?
Third, there will be a significant correlation of the self-efficacy and career-maturity level?
In order to verify the above hypotheses ; 420 5th and 6th graders were sampled as subjects from four different elementary schools located in Daejon. The measure of self-efficacy developed by Sherer, Maddux, Mercandante, Prentice-Dunn, Jacobs and Rogers(1982) was divided into two categories, common efficacy and social efficacy. Career-maturity was based on the instrument which had been developed by the Educational Research Center of Kangwon-do, to measure the maturity level of career development of those sampled children. This study adopted just the attitude measure and ability measure to figure out how the individual choose his career.
This study used the SPSS 10.0 statistical program to process data. T-test, one-way ANOVA(analysis of variance), reliability analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis were conducted to test the study hypotheses.
The study results obtained through this process were summarized as follows :
1. Self-efficacy is divided into common efficacy and social efficacy. But there is no significant difference in self-efficacy level by gender and grade.
Female students' career-maturity is higher than male students' and 6th graders' career-maturity is higher than 5th graders'.
2. The social and economic status of parents is positively associated with self-efficacy and career-maturity level.
3. Self-efficacy is deeply connected with career-maturity. The more self-efficacy level is high, the more career-maturity level is high.
This study came to a conclusion that students' self-efficacy affects on the students' career-maturity. The high self-efficacy makes the students have the right and high career-maturity. So we have to develop the program to improve students' self-efficacy.
