The purpose of this study were develop a predictive model and analyse the factors influencing to the oral health promotion behaviors of 5th and 6th grade of elementary school students in Chungnam Province. The subjects were 1,418 students and their mothers. The hypothetical model was developed based on the literature review and Pender's health promotion model and tested by the analysis of moment structure program (AMOS Version 4.0).
The results of this study were summarized as follows :
1. The prevalence rates of dental caries was 51.6% in male and 52.3% in female,
and there was no significantly difference of prevalence between sex.
2. Meanwhile 53.4% students were Group Ⅰ(The group whose oral health promotion behavior(OHPB) was 27 and below), 46.6% students Group Ⅱ(The group whose OHPB was 28 and over) by oral health promotion score. There were significantly differences according to student's sex, number of caries, mother's education level, family type, and action level of oral health promotion behaviors.
3. The highest score was observed in balanced diet and proper way of tooth brushing while the lowest score was regular visit to dentistry in the student's oral health promotion behavior. The highest score was control of smoking and alcohol drinking while the lowest score was flossing, scaling and regular visit to dentistry in the mother's oral health promotion behaviors.
4. As a result of multiple regression analysis, mother's oral health promotion behavior, student's perceived oral health, student's perceived oral importance, student's role responsibility, student's social ego, mother's perceived dental treat were related to the oral health promotion behavior and these provided predicted 22.5%.
5. The modified path model showed a good fitness to the empirical data ( x² 845.536, DF 164, P-value 0.0000, GFI 0.935, AGFI 0.917, RMR 0.017, NFI 0.816, NNFI 0.821). Student's perceived oral health status and mother's oral health promotion behavior and mother's oral health belief were found to have significant direct effects on the student's oral health promotion behavior. Mother's oral health promotion behavior and student's stress, student's self-esteem was found to have significant indirect effects on the student's oral health promotion behavior.
As a conclusion, mother's oral health behavior could influence their student's oral health behaviors directly and/or indirectly with student's stress, student's self-esteem. In addition, oral health education in elementary school should aim the target to the family as a whole. This finding suggests that the elementary school student need health education corresponding mother and try to high in recognition and importance of oral health for student.
