The present study purposed to examine the relation between parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety and, by doing so, to identify the effects of parents’ rearing behavior on children’s emotional development and adjustment and to obtain basic materials for parent education.
For this purpose, we investigated the general characteristics of parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety, and determined the relation between parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety according to the characteristics.
The subjects of this study were 428 3@^(rd) and 6@^(th) grade students at six elementary schools in Dae-jeon, and from them were collected data about parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety. We used a rearing behavior scale developed by Park, Young-Yae(1995) to survey parents’ rearing behavior, and a depression scale for children translated and standardized by Jo Su cheol and Lee Yeong sik(1990) to measure depression perceived by children, and an anxiety scale for infants and adolescents children translated and standardized by Choi Jin suk and Jo Su cheol(1990) to measure children’s anxiety.
The general characteristics of parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety were examined based on means, standard deviations and t test, and the relation between parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety were determined through correlation analysis and regression analysis.
The results of this research are as follows.
As for the general characteristics of parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety, first, children perceived parents’ rearing behavior to be affectionate-reception in general, less permissiveness- nonintervention and less rejection-restriction. Second, children’s anxiety level was relatively higher than their depression level, but their depression and anxiety were not high. Based on the general characteristics, the relation between parents’ rearing behavior and children’s depression and anxiety are described as follows. First, children’s depression was higher when their parents were rejection-restriction and their mothers were less warmth-acceptance. As for the relative effect of parents’ rearing behavior on the sub factors of children’s depression, mothers’ rejection-restriction rearing behavior had the most significant effect on children’s general depression. In addition, mothers’ rejection-restriction rearing behavior had the most significant effect on children’s depression from negative body image, lack of self efficacy, lack of interest and negative self image, and mothers’ warmth-acceptance rearing behavior had the most significant effect on children’s depression from negative body image.
Second, children’s anxiety was higher when their parents were rejection- restriction and their fathers were permissiveness- nonintervention. As for the relative effect of parents’ rearing behavior on children’s anxiety, fathers’ rejection-restriction rearing behavior had the most significant effect on children’s general anxiety. In addition, mothers’ rejection-restriction rearing behavior had the most significant effect on children’s anxiety from worry, fear and isolation-unhappiness, fathers’ rejection- restriction rearing behavior on children’s anxiety from anger-impulse, and the fathers’ permissiveness- nonintervention rearing behavior on children’s physical-physiological expression of anxiety.
In conclusion, children perceived their parents’ rearing behavior positively and their depression and anxiety levels were not high. In general, children’s depression and anxiety showed a higher correlation with their parents’ rejection-restriction rearing behavior than with their warmth- acceptance rearing behavior. Thus, parent education needs to help parents reduce their rejection·restrictive rearing behavior.
