The purpose of this study is to help aromatherapy to be firmly in the saddle as an alternative therapy through clarifying that it' s much effective than ordinary massage on getting rid of stress when aroma oil' s applied by inhaling the perfume.
The test was performed from Oct. 22, 2005 to Nov. 6, 2005, targeting 20 subjects (4 males and 16 females) in their 20' s to 40' s. They were randomly selected from workers and graduate students and divided into two groups; aroma massage group (experimental group, aroma group) and ordinary massage group (control group, ordinary group). To keep homogeneity, subjects of each group were selected from people that have similar age, income, academic background, and marital status.
The general characteristics of homogeneity in each experimental group and control group were tested with the real number and percentage. The homogeneity test of alpha MEF standard index in the aroma group and the ordinary group was statistically done by t?test of an independent sample. Alpha MEF indices in each time period of both aroma group and ordinary group were statistically identified with subject sample t?test.
QEEG-8, 8-channel computerized and wired measuring system of Electro-encephalogram, was used as an electroencephalograph, an examining tool. Aroma oils such as almond carrier oil, orange, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, and marjoram essential oil were applied.
The findings are as follows;
1. As a result of comparing the alpha-wave MEF (8 channels) in the aroma group before massage and 10 minutes after massage, aroma massage was statistically proven to be effective because p is less than 0.05.
2. As a result of comparing the alpha-wave MEF in the aroma group before massage and 25 minutes after massage, P4 (channel 8) in a posterior parietal lobe showed significance. The other 7 channels didn't show any significant difference.
3. As a result of comparing the alpha-wave MEF in the ordinary group before. massage, 10 and 25 minutes after massage, each channel and 8 channels (average value) didn't showed any statistically significant difference.
4. As a result of comparing the alpha-wave MEF in the aroma group 10, 25 minutes after massage and ordinary group, the alpha-wave MEF of the aroma group appeared to be higher than that of the ordinary group, but didn't show statistically significant difference.
5. As a result of comparing the effect of massage on the aroma group and ordinary group using the alpha-wave MEF, the effect of massage last longer with the aroma group.
6. The alpha-wave MEF 10 and 25 minutes after massage in Channel 7 and 8 in a posterior parietal lobe was higher with the aroma group than with the ordinary group.
