The purpose of this study was to examine how public and private elementary school students perceive the styles of their teacher, to find out different levels of each group's students' satisfaction for their school lives. And it was to find out the correlations between the teacher style that the elementary school students have perceived and the students' satisfaction level for their school lives.
These are the research questions for this study.
First, are there any differences in the styles of teachers which are perceived by the public elementary school students and by the private ones?
Second, are there any differences in the students' satisfaction level according to the distinction between the public and the private school?
Third, are there any differences in the students' satisfaction level according to the teacher style they've perceived?
Fourth, are there any differences in the correlations between the teacher style that they've perceived and the students' satisfaction level for their school lives according to the distinction between the public and the private school?
For getting the answers for these questions, I've conducted a research survey on 400 6th grade elementary school students of 2 public and 2 private elementary school in Seoul. The instrument used to measure how children looked at the style of their teachers was Gim, Chung-gi's(2001) inventory based on the Washburne and Heil's(1960) study for the classification of teacher styles. And it used to instrument for school life satisfaction levels which were modified for the higher classes of elementary school by Son, Sun-ja(1993). To analyze the survey, I've calculated the frequency and percentage for the sex, school distinctions, and teacher styles, and taken the average(mean) and the standard deviation for the school life satisfaction levels. In addition, I've tried to verify the meaningful differences for the statistical data through T-test, and Anova, Chi-Square tests.
These are the results of this study.
First, the teacher styles the elementary school students had perceived were distributed as 2 : 6 : 2 for turbulent : self-controlling : fearful without any distinction between the public and the private school.
Second, the public elementary school students showed more higher satisfaction levels for school life, overall lessons, relationships between friends, physical environments, school events and special activities, and overall satisfaction. However, there were no big differences in satisfaction levels for relationship with their teachers between the public and the private school.
Third, correlation between the satisfaction level in their school and teacher styles perceived by elementary school students showed the higher satisfaction levels in the order of turbulent - self-controlling - fearful except the satisfaction levels for the relationship with their teachers. The satisfaction levels for the relationship with their teachers showed the higher levels in the order of self-controlling - turbulent - fearful.
Fourth, there came the results that there were main effects in the most part but were not reciprocal interaction effects in the study for main and reciprocal interaction effects about school distinctions and teacher styles. However, there were reciprocal interaction effects in the satisfaction levels for school events and special activities. There was reciprocal interaction effects on the overall satisfaction for school life in the 90% reliance level. There came the result that school distinctions and teacher styles have a meaningful effect on the satisfaction levels for school lives.
To sum those results up, the satisfaction levels for the school life depen on how the elementary school students perceive their teachers as well as school environments and teaching-learning supports have an effect on them as the differences in the satisfaction between the public and the private school. Children feel much more satisfaction when their teachers understand and accept them, and give lots of love to them. On the other hand, the teachers expect for their students to keep orders and plans rather than accpet and treat them unconditionally. Therefore, we need to try to contemplate the teacher's roles and qualities meaningfully based on this study.
