The purpose of this study is to analyze data about the practices of native Korean speakers'' speech act in compliments and examine the aspects of speech act in compliments and compliment responses in order to present a scheme helpful for Korean language learners to perform the most appropriate speech act in compliments when they have to complement and respond to compliments.$$a$$aChapter Ⅱ reviewed the speech act theory, along with the concept, functions, characteristics, and types of the entire speech act in compliments.$$a$$aChapter Ⅲ presented the data collection methods used to identify the types and expressions of native Korean speakers'' compliment responses, along with the framework for data analysis. On this basis, compliment responses found in speech act in compliments were largely divided into four categories, or accepting, evading, refusing, and no response; then, accepting was subdivided into three categories, or appreciating, agreeing, and expressing joyfulness, evading into eight ones, or confirming compliments, expressing embarrassment and doubt, change the topic, explaining, joking, returning compliments, returning merits, and compensating, and refusing into three ones, or denying and reducing compliments.$$a$$aThe most frequent type of compliment response was evading (52.5%), followed by no response (20.5%), refusing (14.5%), and accepting (12.5%). Evading is most frequently used in Korea with social atmosphere valuing modesty due to the burden for politeness and modest expressions in compliment responses when people cannot receive or refuse compliments.$$a$$aThe rate of no response was higher than in other cultural areas, because this type of response is to overcome a difficulty by evading compliment response itself when people have difficulty in accepting or refusing compliments.$$a$$aOn the other hand, accepting and refusing were relatively less preferred than other types of responses because these types of responses could make a compliment receiver look immodest depending on the relations between the speaker and the listener.$$a$$aAnd three social variables, or gender, age, and intimacy, were applied to examine different distributions of compliment responses used. As for gender of the speaker and the listener, speech act in compliments between males generated a lower rate of compliment performance and a relatively higher rate of compliment acceptance than other types of act; however, it was not a significant variable. When the listener is older than the speaker, the response of evading appeared very frequently, probably because people may evade compliments given by younger one, rather than refusing or accepting them, for appearance''s sake. The response of accepting appeared less frequently if there was high intimacy between the listener and the speaker while compliment itself was less performed in case of low intimacy between them.$$a$$aBased on expressions drawn from the analysis of compliment response types, expressions Korean language learners could use effectively in responding to compliments in the actual speech act in compliments were summarized according to types: accepting, evading, and refusing.$$a$$aChapter Ⅳ considered speech act in compliments found in Korean language textbooks. It reviewed 9 textbooks in three types compiled by a university operating a Korean language curriculum to see how compliments were dealt with in the textbooks and to determine how the aspects of compliment responses found in the textbooks differed from the types of compliment responses by native Korea speakers discussed in Chapter Ⅲ. Besides, it determined what compliment response expressions were presented in Korean language textbooks and consideration in compiling a textbook in comparison with expressions presented in Chapter Ⅲ.$$a$$aChapter V summarized the result of the study and suggested improvements in the textbooks to teach good compliments and compliment responses. Hopefully, the useful expressions Korean language learners could use in responding to compliments in the real communication should be presented in the Korean language textbooks through systematic studies, and they would be helpful to the teachers and Korean Language learners.$$a$$a
