According to a recent Survey Act revision on Jan. 1, 2003, Korean Geodetic Datum is changed from Bessel Regional Coordinate System to World Geodetic Datum, and the conversion from the old to the new datum will complete in 2007.
The purpose of this study is to compute adequate transformation parameters for different local regions.
By using 7 Parameter similarity transformation models (Bursa-Wolf Model, Molodensky Model, Veis Model), parameters for four different regions were estimated. As a result of estimation, when transformation was carried out by using each regional parameter, 3D RMSE of the transformation were as follows: 3.1cm in Incheon, 4.7cm in Seoul, 6.1cm in Daejeon and 5.3cm in Gwangju. Since all these values are better than the permissible error range of an 1:1000 numerical map (70 cm), it is considered that the transformations are successfully performed. Meanwhile, when conducting coordinate transformation using the parameters estimated in a single region (Daejeon parameter), the 3D RMSE were dramatically increased: 5.40m in Incheon, 0.93m in Seoul, 0.93m in Gwangju.
Therefore, it is conclude that the coordinate transformation should be conducted using the parameters estimated from each region for accuracy and efficiency.
