The object of this thesis is to study the Ceremonial ornaments which had been used in the latter period of Joseon Dynasty and to show representative examples of wearing methods from deductions on the names recorded in 『Goongjoongbalki』 and through analyses on Ceremonial ornaments which hadbeen differently used.
The Ceremonial ornaments recorded in 『Goongjoongbalki』 are not the personal ornaments chosen for one's tastes, but the very important data to study the rites and events in the Royal court as adequate purposes for specific rites and event in the Royal court.
In 『Goongjoongbalki』, for women's ornaments, many for Garei (Royal wedding ceremony) were recorded as Jokdoori (ornamental hat), Binyeo(hair barrettes), Norigae (pendants), Yisik (earrings) and Jiwhan (rings).
Jokdoori and womens ceremonial coronets had been developed due to the prohibition of wearing false coiffures and their size had been getting smaller from the size to fit the whole part of hairs at the first time and then to the small size, which could be placed onto the forehead during the period of later parts of Joseon dynasty.
Among rites and events in the Royal court, there was a special event called Gantaek, (selecting a queen or crown princess from candidates), which was conducted by the three steps. At the first and second step, some Ceremonial ornaments were recorded related to Sayangmeori, the various hair-ornament styles of lady candidateswhile at the third step, lady candidates were supposed to be decorated with a flourish and dressedup a sophisticated style, called Garaemeori.
The records in 『Goongjoongbalki』, show Garaemeori worn in the royal wedding ceremonies in the year of 1848, 1882, 1893and 1906. Accordingly, the overall analyses could be achieved through three cases in which the Ceremonial ornaments were listed in detail.
Soosik, decorated on the day of the Royal wedding ceremony was the hair ornament style which represented the supreme style of hair ornaments. This was conducted 4 times from the year of 1819 to 1906 on the Royal wedding. Even with some differences in number and type, there had been recorded no big changes in the basic construction.
Among the records on the coming of age ceremony, there were two events in 1848 and 1882. From the records of the wedding ceremony for King Heonjong and Kyoungbin Kim, it was confirmed that through three steps, the style of hair ornaments has been conducted as Soosik, Gwangsik, and Keunmeori in accordance with each step.
Besides, in 『Goongjoongbalki』, some kinds of the hair ornaments that were decorated in accordance with hair styles such as Keunmeori, Jojimmeori, and Sayangmeori were found. The variety practices were recorded various kinds of Norigae (pendants) such as Jangdonorigae (pendant with ornament knife), Hyangnorigae (pendant with perfume), Samcheonjoo (pendant with three ornaments) and with regard to Samjak (a set of pendants with three ornaments), the structures have been reviewed and studied by the classifications of styles and materials.
Among the antique earrings, hanging styles to the ears had being prevailed and hadwidely used in the area of North Korea while the records to use these styles were also found in 『Goongjoongbalki』, and photographic evidences.
The antique rings in the latter period of Chosun dynasty were little decorated and simply engraved whereas earrings in 『Goongjoongbalki』 decorated with various materials and pearls had been recorded and listed as an article for Royal wedding ceremony from the year of 1848 to 1906. Since the similar records were found in Baktongsaonhae, it is considered that styles of earrings in Coryeo dynasty were succeeded to Joseon dynasty.
Men's accessories recorded in 『Goongjoongbalki』 were Gwanja, Poongjam, Donggot, and hat ornaments such as Jungja, Yipyoung, Hosoo, and Sangmo. Also, the ornaments for the Royal wedding ceremony of King Soonjong (1882) were recorded and in 『Sanneungbalki』 the structures of hat ornaments were listed in detail.
Yijeon as a decoration of Junlip (military cap) was listed in various records of Jinchaneugwai as much and was presumed to be remains of Unweola of 『Akhakgwaibum』.
Kakgi was used as an accessory for thumb to grip arrows and was recorded in Sillok to have been prepared for Daesarae, which celebrated the King's hunting ceremony. In 『Kookjooreieuseorei』, the drafts on Kakji made of leather were found. But, in『Goongjoongbalki』, Kakji made of gems were mostly recorded also and described as gifts dedicated to King so that it is confirmed that Kakji has been one of the most important men's accessories.
Also, among men's accessories, Daejun as shown in the many portraits is considered to be Jowhan in Seijong Sillok as decorations in type of pendant to the belts like Gwangdahi and Jundae.
The most of 『Goongjoongbalki』 as basic data of this thesis is from the contents of 『Gomunseojipseong 12 and 13』, photo-printed by Jangseogak and some part of 『Goongjoongbalki』 of National Palace Museum of Korea are included in the objects of this thesis. The lists are shown at the table in appendix.
