This study aims to explore job stress and turn-over intention factors of the employees in convention industry with a specific focus on those who operate and plan conventions ("convention planners"). Despite the critical importance of convention planners to the success of the entire convention industry, there have not been enough studies on them. Most studies conducted to this date were on facilities, marketing, and attendees of conventions. One can never emphasize the fact too much that convention planners are at the core of the convention industry. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure that they have supportive work environment to avoid incurring unnecessary turn-over cost or potential degrading of service quality in the convention industry.
An extensive survey of the convention planners was conducted for this study, which included 242 items representing "Individual Characteristics" (demographic characteristics and personal differences), "Organizational Characteristics" (job characteristics, role factors, and internal characteristics), "Job Stress", and "Intention to leave the Job". Participants from various types of relevant organizations were represented in this survey ; and data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Both inferential and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data such as cross tabulation, factor analysis, regression analysis, T-test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
The results indicated that job characteristics do not have significant influence on job stress nor on intention to leave the job. On the other hand, statistically significant differences in job stress and intention of leaving the job were found based on the demographic characteristics and personal differences of convention planners. Additionally, organizational characteristics, except job characteristics, were found to have statistically significant influences on job stress and intention of leaving the job.
In conclusion, the study is particularly meaningful since it is one of the first exploratory studies on the nature of convention planners. Although it is difficult to determine whether the job stressors of convention planners are distinct from those of other sub-groups in tourism industry or other service industries, the study anticipates the effort to identify the underlying disposition of convention planners will lead to the eventual success of the convention industry as a whole.
