The purpose of the present study is to explore whether some factors have influence on the drinking behaviors of college students.
For this purpose, study 1 was conducted to investigate whether perceived stress of college students have influence on the drinking motives, and drinking motivation been moderated by perceived social support, so they would affect the frequency of drinking and amount of alcohol consumed. The participants of this study were 316 college students.
Multiple regression analyses indicated that perceived stress significantly predicted drinking motives, and that the drinking motives found to be significant predictors of alcohol-consumption and drinking frequency.
Especially, social and enhancement drinking motives have an direct influence on alcohol consumption regardless of stress.
In study 2, a daily diary methodology was used to examine over 28 days how the drinking behavior-desire to drink association varied as a function of stress, coping style, alcohol-outcome expectancies(AOEs) in a sample of 245 college students. Alcohol-outcome expectancies divided into positive AOE and negative AOEs(careless/unconcern, cognitive/physical impairment). Positive AOE significantly influence on desire to drink. Thus, the more desire to drink increased, the more alcohol consumption and frequency were increased regardless of stress.
Therefore this study suggest that desire to drink and positive alcohol-outcome expectancy play an important role in drinking behaviors.
