The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parents' rearing attitudes and their children's self-esteem and academic achievement.

First, is there any reletionship between children's self-esteem and their parents' rearing attitudes?
Second, is there any reletionship between children's academic achievement and their parents' rearing attitudes?
The subjects of this study were 310 six-grade elementary school students in jinju, Gyeongsangnamdo. This study was carried out in April. 2005, and 303 questionnaires have been finally analyzed.
The instruments used in this study were parents' rearing attitudes inventory for elementary schoolers developed by Han Tae-Young (1999) and published by the Korea Aptitude Research Institute. The instruments used in self-esteem were Self-Esteem Inventory developed by Coopersmith(1975).
Academic achievement, in this research, used average score in four subjects, Korean, Mathematics, Society, Science, which was examined in March.
The collected date were analyzed using SPSS(Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences) window 12.0 version.
The results of this research are as follows :
First, there was a significant relationship in their self-esteem according to the perceived child-rearing attitudes of the parents. It showed that the children who perceived their parents' rearing attitudes were more affectionate, autonomy-oriented, rationality-oriented, challenge-oriented have higher self-esteem. Especially the affection vs. coldness scale, rationality vs. irrationality scale, challenge vs. nonchallenge scale of the fathers and the affection vs. coldness scale, autonomy vs. control scale has a important influence on their children's self-esteem.
Second, there was a significant relationship in their academic achievement according to the perceived child-rearing attitudes of the parents. It showed that the children who perceived their fathers rearing attitudes were more affectionate, autonomy-oriented, rationality-oriented, challenge-oriented and their mothers rearing attitudes were more affectionate, more autonomy-oriented, more rationality-oriented have higher academic achievement. Especially autonomy vs. control scale, the rationality vs. irrationality scale of the fathers has a important influence on their children's academic achievement.
In conclusion, we can know the fact that parents' rearing attitudes has an effect on their children's self-esteem and academic achievement.
