디지털 기술과 한국 현대시 = Digital technology and Korean contemporary poetry

Digital technology, as an ‘invisible hand’ moving the world, is penetrating deeply into our life and poetry. In addition, the concept of ‘being poetic’ also is expanding its implication. The purpose of this study is to review various perceptions of Korean contemporary poetry on the current situation which digital technology has become parts of daily life. And also this study aims to make an overall examination of changes in contemporary poetry occurring in the new literary environment of the digital age through the analysis of poems. This study is a part of researches on the new identity of Korean contemporary poetry in the transitional period of digital revolution.
For this purpose, this paper has divided discussion into two parts, considering two aspects of digital technology that act on contemporary poetry. This is because the true nature of digital technology would be perceived when we examine its ambivalent properties, namely, the risk of negation and the possibility of affirmation. The first part of the main body is to examine the perception of Korean contemporary poetry on problems in the actuality where digital technology becomes indispensable in everyday life of people. The second part is to analyze poems that accept digital technology as a new methodology of poem writing and attempt changes in contemporary poetry.
The first part of the main body has developed discussion focused on the perception of Korean contemporary poetry on digital technology. The first issue is the problem of value neutrality of digital technology. This is based on the assumption that the ideological nature of digital technology is causing confusion in identity as a result of the popularization of digital technology. Here the discussion is began with the value neutrality of science and technology including digital technology and expanded to literature and technology ideology. The second issue is the confusion of self-identity closely connected to the popularization of digital technology today. I analyzed poems related to the spread of the logic of digital technology, the overturn of mechanical value and human value, and confusion in human identity. The discussion has assumed that today’s digital technology civilization contains both the risk of negation and the possibility of affirmation at the same time.
In the second part of the main body, I have discussed possible changes in Korean contemporary poetry related to digital technology. For this, five issues have been selected. They are ‘poem writing using a computer and the matter of the subject,’ ‘poem writing and reading using digital information,’ ‘poetic language and digital language,’ ‘hypertext and changes in the status of poets and readers’ and ‘the age of multimedia and the horizon of poetry.’ These issues have been derived from observing various aspects of connection between digital technology and contemporary poetry. Particularly with regard to ‘hypertext and changes in the status of poets and readers,’ this study has implemented FanPoem, a hypertext poem writing program, as a method of positive research on the pattern of changes in the status of poets and readers in the cyberspace, the Internet. It is believed that the digital technology should not be criticized without reason. However, the reflection on the identity of contemporary poetry, which is experiencing changes in its pattern and expanding its domain, from a balanced angle should be given.
What is keenly necessary to us is looking for a new way out and identity of contemporary poetry, while flexibly accepting and sharing digital technology and knowledge, but at the same time, guaranteeing individuals’ creativity as much as possible. This can be performed properly only when the deep understanding of past poems, discernment on present poems, and open heart toward future poems have been achieved. However, it is impractical for one individual to have all these abilities. Thus, it is necessary to make practical efforts to create a new form of literary community based on digital environment to activate discussion among researcher from different areas.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

디지털 기술은 세계를 움직이는 ‘보이지 않는 손’으로서 이미 우리의 삶과 시 속에 깊이 스며들어 있으며, 이른바 ‘시적인 것’의 개념 또한 그 내포를 확장하는 방향으로 변화하고 있다. 이 논문은 디지털 기술이 일상화된 현실에 대한 한국 현대시의 다양한 인식을 고찰하는 동시에 디지털 시대의 새로운 문학 환경 속에서 전개되고 있는 현대시의 변화를 실제 작품 분석을 통해 종합적으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이 논문은 더 나아가 디지털 혁명이라는 변혁의 시기에 한국 현대시의 새로운 정체성을 모색하는 연구 작업의 하나이기도 하다.
이를 위해 이 논문에서는 디지털 기술이 현대시에 작용하는 두 가지 측면을 고려하여 본론을 크게 두 개의 장으로 나누었다. 디지털 기술에 내포된 부정의 위험성과 긍정의 가능성이라는 양면적 속성을 모두 고찰해야 비로소 그 진면목을 파악할 수 있다고 판단했기 때문이다. 본론의 첫째 장에서는 디지털 기술의 일상화에 따라 대두되는 현실에서의 문제점에 대한 한국 현대시의 인식을 검토하고, 둘째 장에서는 디지털 기술을 시 창작과 수용의 새로운 방법론으로 받아들여 현대시의 변화를 모색한 작품들을 고찰하는 방식을 택하였다.
본론의 첫째 장에서는 디지털 기술에 대한 한국 현대시의 인식에 초점을 맞추어 논의를 전개하였다. 먼저 첫째 항목에서는 디지털 기술의 가치중립성 문제를 제기하였다. 이는 디지털 기술의 일상화에 따른 정체성의 혼란을 초래한 단초가 다름아닌 디지털 기술의 이데올로기적 속성에 있다는 판단에 의한 것이다. 여기서는 디지털 기술을 포함한 과학 기술의 가치중립성 문제를 출발점으로 삼아 문학과 기술 이데올로기의 문제에까지 논의를 확대하였다. 둘째 항목에서는 우리들이 지금 디지털 기술의 일상화와 맞물려 자아 정체성이 혼란스러운 현실에서 살고 있다는 점을 논증하였다. 디지털 기술 논리의 일상화 문제를 비롯해 기계적 가치와 인간적 가치의 전도, 그리고 인간 정체성의 혼란 등의 순으로 작품을 분석하였다. 지금 디지털 기술 문명은 부정의 위험성과 긍정의 가능성이라는 이중의 속성을 동시에 내포하고 있다는 것이다.
본론의 둘째 장에서는 디지털 기술과 관련한 한국 현대시의 변화 가능성이라는 관점에서 논의를 전개하였다. 이를 위해 다섯 가지 세부 항목을 설정했다. 즉, ‘컴퓨터로 시 쓰기와 주체의 문제’를 비롯해 ‘디지털 정보를 이용한 시 쓰기와 시 읽기’, ‘시의 언어와 디지털 언어’, ‘하이퍼텍스트와 시인·독자의 위상 변화’ 그리고 ‘멀티미디어 시대와 시의 지평’이 그것들이다. 이들 세부 항목은 디지털 기술이 현대시와 접목되는 다양한 양상을 종합적으로 고찰한 결과 얻어진 것이다. 특히 ‘하이퍼텍스트와 시인·독자의 위상 변화’ 항목에서는 인터넷이란 가상공간에서 시인과 독자의 위상이 변화하는 양상을 실증적으로 고찰하기 위한 방안으로 하이퍼텍스트 시쓰기 프로그램인 팬포엠(FanPoem)을 직접 구현해 보였다. 이제는 디지털 기술을 무조건 비판만 할 것이 아니라 그 양상이 변모되고 영역이 확장되고 있는 현대시의 정체성에 대해서 균형 잡힌 시각에서 거듭 성찰해야 할 시점이라고 판단된다.
지금 우리에게 긴요한 것은 디지털 기술이나 지식은 유연하게 받아들이고 공유하되 개인의 창조성은 최대한 보장하는 맥락에서 현대시의 새로운 활로와 정체성을 모색하는 일이다. 이 같은 작업은 과거의 시에 대한 깊은 이해와 현재의 시에 대한 분별력, 그리고 미래의 시에 대한 포용력을 함께 갖출 때 비로소 온전하게 진행될 수 있다. 하지만 이 모든 능력을 어느 한 개인이 두루 갖춘다는 것은 현실적으로 매우 어려운 일이다. 따라서 전문 영역이 다른 여러 연구자들이 논의를 활성화할 수 있도록 디지털 환경에 기반을 둔 새로운 형태의 문학공동체를 만들어 나가려는 실천적 노력이 더욱 요청된다고 하겠다.
