(The Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children)를 이은해, 최혜영, 김미해(1990)가 수정한 유아용 자아지각 척도를 사용하였으며, 유아의 친사회적 행동 검사 도구는 김영옥(2003)이 개발한 유아의 친사회적 행동 평가 척도(PBSYC)를 사용하였다.

The present study purposed to investigate the effects of play activities related to traditional children's songs on children’s self-perception and prosocial behavior and to provide basic materials for planning the play activities related to traditional children's songs in the field of education for children. For these purpose, the following research questions were formulated.
Question 1: What effects do play activities related to traditional children's songs have on children’s self-perception?
Question 2: What effects do play activities related to traditional children's songs have on children’s prosocial behavior?
The subjects of this study were 46 five-year-old children selected from two classes of M Childcare Center in Gwangju. They were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (23 children) or a control group (23 children). Both the experimental group and the control group learned traditional children’s songs in the new song class, and then the experimental group children participated in play activities related to traditional children’s songs while the control group children participated in activities related to things in everyday life. The experiment was carried out in order of preliminary research, pre-test, six weeks’ experiment and post-test. The period of the experiment was six weeks from August 9 2004 to September 18 2004, two sessions each week and a total of 12 sessions.
In order to measure children’s self-perception, we used a self-perception scale for young children that Lee Eun-hye, Choi Hyu-yeong and Kim Mi-hae (1990) prepared by modifying ‘The Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children’ developed by Harter and Pike (1984). In addition, we used ‘The Prosocial Behavior Scale of Young Children (PBSYC)’ developed by Kim Young-ok (2003) to measure children's prosocial behavior.
In order to examine the effects of play activities related to traditional children's songs on children’s self-perception and prosocial behavior, this study analyzed the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test for the groups through t-test using SPSS program.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, children in the experimental group who participated in activities related to traditional children’s songs showed a statistically very significant difference in self-perception compared to those in the control group. In addition, the experimental group showed statistically significant differences from the control group in all of the sub-factors of self-perception, which are ‘cognitive ability,’ ‘physical ability,’ ‘acceptance of the peers’ and ‘acceptance of the mother.’
Second, children in the experimental group who participated in activities related to traditional children’s songs showed a statistically very significant difference in prosocial behavior compared to those in the control group. In addition, the experimental group showed statistically significant differences from the control group in all of the sub-factors of prosocial behavior, which are ‘leadership,’ ‘helping,’ ‘communication,’ ‘initiative consideration,’ ‘approaching,’ ‘sharing’ and ‘empathy and self-control.’
The results of this research show that play activities related to traditional children’s songs are effective in improving children’s self-perception and prosocial behavior. Accordingly, these results suggest that the application of play activities related to traditional children’s songs can be an effective teaching-learning method for enhancing children’s self-perception and prosocial behavior.
