This study was intended to find what high school students(boys and girls) understand food nutrition labeling, what items they consider when they buy foods among many items, and how much they trust in nutrition facts, in order to provide a fundamental data for nutrition training for healthy diet to which students are guided by buying good foods.
Participants were 344 high school students in Gwang-ju and were asked to fill in a questionnaire, which consisted of 6 items in general characteristics, 8 items in processed foods purchase behavior, 18 items in the realities of food facts, 8 items in the realities of nutrition facts.
Data collected were processed by the SPSS statistical program to produce its frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation with One-way ANOVA, t - test, and x²-test.
    The result was summarized as follows;
    1. High school students spent either less than 1,000won or more than 1,510won to buy foods themselves or eat foods their family purchased for snack, with less than 3 times a week, one a day. In school cafeteria, had most of students snacks, followed by supermarkets. Most frequently preferred snack was drinks, including milks and yogurt, ice-creams, and biscuits in the order. There were 4 reasons that students bought snack in the order as follows: 1) they felt like some snack, 2) they were hungry, 3) they felt bored, 4) they needed something to relax themselves. The last reason, 4), was related to the frequency of students' having snack.
For the criteria of buying a processed food, students considered the taste primarily the taste, followed by price, quantity, and nutrition in the order. For taste, gender and family income were the influential factors. Girls, as well as students from family with higher income, were more likely to consider taste than boys. When students were asked what idea comes into their minds and what they think are most important when they buy foods, the result was the same: taste, price, and quantity in the order, with nutrition being the 6th order. It is found that students from family with higher income and those who have snack more often tended to lay stress upon taste and health, whereas those from family with lower income show a tendency to emphasize price and quantity.
    2. Price sensitivity was relatively high, showing that girls had the greater price sensitivity than boys, so did those from the lower income group. Although diet sensitivity was not so high, girls rather than boys, and students from family with higher income were more likely to have the greater sensitivity to diet. For habitual tendency to buy foods, girls rather than boys, and those with greater allowance for snack were more likely to make a habit of buying a specific food.
For impulse-buying tendencies, it is found that those who spent more allowance for snack and more often show the stronger tendency to buy snack impulsively. For brand commitment, girls rather than boys, and those with more allowance for snack tended to have more interest in brand. While students at large showed a low tendency to buy a new product, those who were from family with higher income, had more allowance for snack, and had snack more often indicated a higher tendency to do it.
Students were not particularly interested in checking food facts when they bought foods. Rather, those with more allowance were more likely to check food facts. However, ads sensitivity was relatively high, showing that ads has a significant role in adolescents' buying foods behavior. Girls rather than boys, those from family with higher income, and those with greater allowance showed the higher sensitivity to ads.
For regard to parents opinion, students tended to adhere to their opinion, without regard to parents' opinion, with those from family with higher income being shown the greater regard to parents' opinion. Sensitivity to design and colors was moderate, showing that girls rather than boys, those from family with higher income, and those with greater allowance had the higher sensitivity to design.
    3. For rate of checking up food facts, girls tended to check it more than boys, showing a higher rate of neglecting food facts. Why they check up food facts is because it needs to find the shelf-life, because they want to know the price, and because they want to compare the priceㆍweight to that of other products. Similarly, shelf-life, price, and product name was considered first when they checked up food facts. The products whose foods facts were most frequently checked by high-schoolers were milks/dairy products with the shortest shelf-life, breads, and instant food. On the contrary, drinks, ice-creams, and the foods with long-time shelf-life, such as chocolates, candies, and caramels, were less checked by them.
The reason they do not check up food facts are: 1) that they bought foods habitually by chance, 2) that they did not understand what food facts is, and 3) that they did not trust in food facts.
    4. Most of respondents stored the left-over foods at their disposal without any attention. Some responded that they put the foods always in the refrigerator, and other said that they stored it as guided on the wrapping cover. When they bought bad foods, a higher rate of respondents said that they either ate or threw it away, while a lower rate of them said that they returned it to the store or changed it with other products. In case of changing or returning foods, the reasons were found to be the value of money, the highest rate, harm to the human body, and consumer's right in the order.
    5. Students thought that the shelf-life of foods was most important in food facts, followed by quantity and manufacturer. But, the importance depends on a type of foods. For example, price and shelf-life were important facts in biscuits, noodles, drinks, and ice-creams. For breads, milks and dairy products, and instant food, there was some difference in the importance of food facts although shelf-life and price were important, either.
    6. Most of students did not understand nutrition facts, but a higher rate of them said that they have ever read nutrition facts. The reasons that they read nutrition facts were: to find how much and which ingredient was contained in the foods they choose, to be curious about something new on the wrapping cover, to maintain good weight control, and to make healthcare in that order. In contrast, the reasons that they have never read nutrition facts were: 1) that they had no interest in nutrition facts, a highest rate of respondents, 2) that nutrition facts was too small or coarse to read, and 3) that it was difficult to see nutrition facts, in the order. It was highly required the training and publicity activities of nutrition facts, much more the need of nutrition facts.
When asked the impact of nutrition facts on consumers, most of students responded most positively that nutrition facts helps us choose good and healthy foods for ourselves. Besides, they suggested other opinion that it encourages us to compare it to other products and, that it promotes the higher quality of products.
Based on the result stated above, it is found that high school students have a lower understanding of food facts or nutrition facts, that they do not consider nourishing elements when they buy foods, and that they have higher experience in reading nutrition facts. Since they have not made the most of their knowledge, although they have recognized the importance of nutrition facts and the need of training · publicity activities in nutrition facts, the researcher suggest that it need food facts through nutrition training, along with a consecutive, step-by-step publicity and training projects for nutrition facts.
