Women have long been hoping for a bright and clear skin. Truly clear skin has been the number one requirement in judging beauty though the criteria of beauty have changed according to the times. The skin condition of modern women has become more complex due to excessive stress and environmental pollution, so various peeling products are introduced in the market to satisfy customers' needs of clear skin.
Especially chemical peeling achieved a significant position in cosmetics in the 1990s and brought about great advance in skin care after the peel. Nowadays various methods of skin care after the peel are being suggested which are more skin-friendly, easy to use and can be used in combination with safe home-care systems. The paper is dedicated to know how much people recognize on the complications of peeling and their various use of exfoliators and to study skin care programs in both aesthetic and medical skin care systems. So the paper is aimed to reveal the importance of skin care after the peel depending on the condition of skin by making people more aware of exfoliating products to minimize skin complications caused by peeling. The data collected in the study is analyzed through SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) program. To understand general characteristics of the surveyed women, frequency and percentage were calculated. And χ2(Chi-square) verification, frequency analysis, t-test, and one-way ANOVA were used to know the realities of women's use of the peel, their skin care after the peel including the use of sunscreen and functional cosmetics and their understanding about aged skin and sensitive skin.
1. The result of investigating women's skin type shows that 34.3% of the interviewed women said they had dry skin. In regards of skin sensitivity to
temperature, 67.2% of the women said they were sensitive to temperature while 38% said they were not. The investigation also shows that single women, women with professional jobs and women working at an office are more sensitive to the changes of temperature than other women. 39.1% of the women said they had skin troubles especially during a change of seasons and 24.2% said they had acne mostly on the cheeks.
2. The result of investigating pigmentations caused by acne reveals that 57.3% of the women said they had pigmentations caused by acne while 42.7% said they didn't. Asked about wrinkles, 46.0% of the women answered they had wrinkles around eyes, 32.2% answered they had expression wrinkles, 10.1% answered they had other wrinkles, and 8.7% answered they had wrinkles around mouth. Asked about keratose, 71.3% answered they had a little keratose, which takes up most of the interviewed women, 22.1% answered they had much keratose, and 6.6% answered they didn't have keratose at all. The study shows that there are several things that worry women most; discolorations and freckles account for 25.1% then acne 22.4%, dry skin 19.7%, wrinkles 17.6%, sensitive skin 9.6% and others 5.7%.
3. To know the realities of women's use of exfoliators for the peel, it was asked to the women whether they knew about AHA. 54.3% of the women said they knew about it while 45.7% said they didn't. About the effect of exfoliators, 69.0% answered they were effective. And about the frequency of using exfoliators, 34.6% answered they used them depending on the condition of skin, 29.0% answered twice or three times a week, 20.0% answered twice a month, and 16.4% answered they didn't use them. When asked about the reasons to buy exfoliating products, 66.1% of the women, which takes up more than half of the interviewed women, answered to get rid of keratose, 13.6% to tighten pores, 11.4% to make skin white, 5.0% to give firmness to skin, 3.9% to cure acne. Concerning the methods of peeling, 47.5% of the women preferred enzyme peeling. As to the type of peeling products they prefer 45.0% of the women purchased gel type products.
4. 57.5% of the women answered they referred to the advice of experts buying exfoliators and 73.2% of the women answered they used them at night. In the respect of skin care after the peel, most of the women, or 82.4% of the women, answered they put on makeup after the peel. 17.6% of the women answered they didn't usually put on makeup. Asked about the use of sunscreen, 45.5% of the women answered they applied sunscreen everyday whereas only 4.8% of the women answered they didn't.
5. As to the UV index, 48.3% of the women responded they used sunscreens with the UV index of SPF15-30. In regard to the use of special masks after the peel, 44.3% of the women said they used them once or twice a month and thought they were effective.
67.5% of the women answered they used functional cosmetics when appropriate length of time had passed after the peel while 35.5% answered they didn't.
In terms of the side effects after the peel, 45.0% of the women complained dryness, 24.6% rash, 13.6% pigmentation, 13.2% others and 3.6% cold sores.
As a result of studying differences depending on the degree of skin care after the peel, the peel was more effective when followed by the skin care. It was especially true for the women in their thirties and married women.
