The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parent-child communication style, family system and child's friendship quality.
The survey was conducted on 621 children in Seoul and Kyung-Gi region. These children are 5th and 6th grade students from 4 different elementary school.
In order to measure Parent-Child Communication style was used , which was developed by Min, Hye-Young(1990). To measure Family System, FACESⅢ was used, which was developed by Kim, Mi-Ae(1997). Friendship quality was assessed by Friendship Quality Scale (Rhee & Koh, 1999).
The collected data is calculated in percentage by SAS statistic program to see a social population study background for research object, then Cronbach's α factor is calculated to confirm measuring tools reliability. Multiple regression analysis was carried out to find how the relationship between parent-child communication and family system are independently related to child's friendship quality. Also step-wise multiple regression analysis performed to see how parent-child communication and family system affect child's friendship quality.
Research result is summarized as follows.
First, the relationship between parent-child communication was correlated with child's friendship quality. There was significant positive correlation between congruent stance in parents-adolescents communication and the positive factor of peer relation quality. The level of positive factor of peer relation quality such as companionship, emotional and social support, peer satisfaction was high when both father-adolescents and mother-adolescents communications were congruent stance.
Second, the family system was correlated with child's friendship quality. There was significant positive correlation between congruent stance in family cohesion, family adaptability and the positive factor of peer relation quality. The level of positive factor of peer relation quality such as companionship, emotional and social support, peer satisfaction was high when both family cohesion and family adaptability were congruent stance.
Lastly, there was significant positive correlation between congruent stance in family cohesion, family adaptability and mothers-adolescents communication and the positive factor of peer relation quality. There was significant between congruent stance in family cohesion and the conflict negative factor of friendship. There was significant positive correlation between congruent stance in fathers-adolescents communication and the competition of friendship quality. There was significant positive correlation between congruent stance in family cohesion and the competition of friendship quality.
