This study investigates how effective group art therapy is in improving the juvenile withdrawing behavior which prevents students from leading a normal school life. Participants in this study are 6 male students from a middle school located in Seoul City. Those students had maintained an abnormal personal relationship and were selected by their home room teachers.
Group art treatments had been conducted twice a week for 8 weeks, totalling 16 sessions from March 11 to April 30, 2002. A typical session lasted approximately 50 minutes.
Three methods were employed to examine an improvement in depressive behavior as a result of a group art treatment.
First, questionnaire test was conducted to examine whether there is an improvement in withdrawing behavior before and after group art therapy. Second, projection picture test was conducted to examine any improvement in withdrawing behavior. Third, questionnaire test was conducted for parents and home room teachers to check any improvement in withdrawing behavior after the therapy.
Major findings from the analysis based on case study are:
Case 1: A had suffered from mental depression (extreme fears and horrors) and due to hair loss and dwarfism caused by hereditary disease. After several sessions of therapy, analysis of his paintings showed self-confidence, resulting in an active life while his early unstable behavior becomes less apparent. Survey for parent indicates that he regains mental security and self-confidence
Case 2: B had been indirectly affected by his fathers frustration from an unfulfilled dream of becoming a medical doctor and it put a unbearable psychological burden on Bs growth. B becomes self confidence after he took a drawing and painting therapy.
Case 3: C lost his self confidence and acquired a passive and defensive attitude because of his parents overprotection and physical abuse in a camp. After therapy, he showed emotional stability and suffered less from fear. However, a test indicates worsened withdrawing behavior even after a group art therapy and analysis of his paintings shows an anthromorphism as well as a schizophrenic symptom. He was sent to a psychiatrist for a further medical treatment.
Case 4: C had developed a strong defense and a passive withdrawing behavior, resulting from his parents over expectation from children. Analysis of his paintings shows that he experienced a catharsis by projecting his depressed mental state into paintings. After the therapy, he acquired a considerate behavior while aggressive behavior was lessened, clearly indicating that a group arts therapy is quite effective in improving a withdrawing behavior.
Case 5: E was vacillating between reality and idealism, cursing the lower social and economic status of his family. After therapy, his presentation skill and personal relationship was greatly improved. However, questionnaire test shows a higher degree of withdrawing behavior and projection picture test indicates a schizophrenic symptom.
Case 6: F studied several years in a foreign country before he returned to Korea. He was suffering from conflict between foreign and Korean education. Analysis of his paintings showed his experience of a catharsis by projecting his depression into paintings. After therapy, he developed a better personal relationship and got a positive feedback from his outstanding skills in English, leading a confident and active school life.
Based on these findings, it was concluded that depression behaviors such as shyness, lack of presentation skill, over-depression, isolation was greatly lessened, consequently implying that group art therapy is effective in correcting a depressive behavior. In particular, after therapy each examinee showed a determined attitude and self- confidence toward his future direction. Nevertheless, parents overprotection or negligence might cause neurosis to recur, making it a necessity to continue a further study.
