The objectives of this study were to examine how to perceive parental leadership conception according to parental demographic variables and to investigate its relationship with parenting behaviors. The subjects were 434 parents who having children registered in preschools, elementary schools and high schools.
As for examination on the perception of parental leadership conception, we used a modified questionnaire based on the study of Korean leadership conception(Shin Koo Bum,2000) and the earlier studies about leadership as assessment tool. Also, in order to assess parenting behaviors, we used a "Questionnaire on Mothers' Parenting Behaviors" made by Son Seung Hee(2002). The data were analyzed with frequency, percentage for descriptive statistics and with Chi-Square Test for examination on the perception of parental leadership conception according to demographic backgrounds. Also, Pearson correlations were employed to analyze the data for assessment on relationship between perception of parental leadership conception and parenting behaviors. The results of this study were as follows:
First, as for the perception of parental leadership conception according to parental demographic backgrounds such as age of parents, education level of parents, standard of living and development level of children, leadership definition, sub-area of the perception of parental leadership conception, represented meaningful differences of age of parents, education level of parents and development level of children. Also, type of leadership acquisition represented meaningful differences of standard of living and development level of children. And then, leadership dimension represented meaningful differences of age of parents, education level of parents, standard of living and development level of children.
Second, as for the perception of parental leadership conception and parenting behaviors, leadership definition was positively related to parenting behaviors. Especially, transformational leadership was positively related to 'intimacy-reasoning guidance', 'limit setting' and 'parental involvement' in parenting behaviors. As for relationship between type of leadership acquisition and parenting behaviors, perception of importance about environmental factor of leadership was positively related to 'intimacy-reasoning guidance', 'responsiveness', 'limit setting' and 'parental involvement' in parenting behaviors. Also as for relationship between leadership dimension and parenting behaviors, coaching type of parents was positively related to 'intimacy-reasoning guidance', 'limit setting' and 'parental involvement' in parenting behaviors. And then leader type of parents was positively related to all variables of parenting behaviors-'intimacy-reasoning guidance', 'responsiveness', 'limit setting' and 'parental involvement'.
In conclusion, the results of above suggest that parents need to intimacy-reasoning guidance and invariable limit setting when they guide and lead their children. Also, it is important for parents to involve in their child's life and respond to child's needs properly, not to respond sensitively and involve excessively. The perception of leadership conception found on studying of recently theories about the leadership. Practically, few parents are perceived it correctly and act properly according to the leadership conception. In spite of these unfavorable circumstances, we emphasize that turnover toward fully understanding about leadership conception and fostering new leaders in Korean society should be essentially important.
Enter to the 21th century, this paper point out the necessity of perception about new leadership with parents and emphasize on fostering of leadership through educational training.
