This research has been made to figure out the relations and the effect between the social support and the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles by understanding the awareness of the social support for the grandparents in kinship homes, one type of the family cares on commission, and the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles.
Therefore, this research classifies the resources of social support, which is given to surrogate parents, into relatives, friends, neighbours as well as investigating that how the emotional and physical support is offered, what the relations between the parental roles and the value of responsibilities are like, and what the factors which influence on them are. Three hundred and thirty-three grandparents, registered at fourteen commission centers of family support, were surveyed by a questionnaire for this study. The index of social support, organised by Sun-Young Park in 1998, was modified and used in order to measure social help in this dissertation. In addition, the translation of PPRS (Perception of Parental Role responsibilities Scales, by Gilbert and Hanson(1983)), by Eun-Ryung Bang in 1986, was applied in a way to fit into the roles of surrogate parents for measuring parental responsibilities.
The SPSS, the statistic program was used for the analysis of data, the frequency and the percentage were evaluated to examine the general characteristics of the people for research, and Cronbach's α was calculated for the reliability examination. Furthermore, ANOVA was applied in order to prove the differences between the social support and the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles based on the general features of the people in this study. And Pearson's coefficient of correlation was utilized to see the connection between the social support which surrogate parents were perceiving and the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles. Besides, Multiple regulation was practised to scrutinize how influential the subordinates of the recourses of social support, which the surrogate parents were aware of, are on the parental roles and the recognition of the responsibilities.
The results from this research are as follows,
First, having been satisfied with the social support, the grandparents in kinship cares were highly gratified at the emotional support from families, relatives, friends and neighbours as well as the substantial support from administrative and private machineries. Besides, their satisfaction with the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles appeared mostly high in thirteen areas among all the areas which this study had already set up.
Secondly, the general features of the grand parents in kinship homes were that there was no different recognition between the satisfaction grand parents had from the social support and the responsibilities of parental roles.
Thirdly, in the case of the relations between the social support and the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles, the emotional and the physical support of families and relatives, among the resources of the social support, were in proportion to the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles. Moreover, the support of friends and neighbours was in proportion to emotional support. In the case of the relations between administrative and private machineries and the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles, both emotional and physical support showed less correlation.
Lastly, the factor which had an effect on the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles among the subordinate resources of social support was the emotional support of families, relatives, friends, neighbours. Especially, the emotional support of families and friends was stronger than those of the others.
According to this research, it was proven that there were mutual relations between the social support for the grandparents in kinship cares and the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles, and what had an impact on the recognition of the responsibilities in parental roles was the social aid of emotional support.
To round up, this study suggests that the political countermeasures, which are concrete and specified, are necessary for the grandparents in kinship homes who are relatively left in the blind spot in the structure of the social support, by clarifying the recognition of parental responsibilities and understanding some extent of the social support for the grand parents in kinship homes.
