It cannot be denied that wonen's appearance management is one result
produced by the patriarchal society, which strongly requires beautiful appearance
of women compared with men. But women also manage appearance in oder to
make their life active, not passive, having recognized the demands of patriarchal
society. So this study premises that experience of appearance management is the
interesting and meaningful work for women.
The purposes of this study are to investigate the women's motivation, who
are in their twenties, to take cosmetic surgery, and to discover what cosmetic
surgery means for the interviewees who have experienced plastic operation.
Accordingly, this study focuses on social environment and private motivation,
which urge women to take plastic operation, evaluation of cosmetic surgery, and
mental conflict resulted from having experienced of cosmetic surgery.
I make women in their twenties as an object of this study, because they are
very sensitive to the appearance of themselves on account of marriage, job
opportunity, and the relationship with the other sex in Korean society. I
interviewed with them in depth. The results are as follows.
First, women, who are interested in their appearance in usual time in order to
meet the needs of society and self-satisfaction, made their decision 'accidently'
by encouragement of their parents, sisters and female friend. And women in the
state of complex about their appearance made their mind by themselves to solve
their problem.
Second, women, who have experienced cosmetic surgery at least once,
restored self-esteem by changed appearance. Nevertheless, most of them don't
accept the desire of cosmetic surgery on the other portion, or on the same
portion because the fact that they have experienced cosmetic surgery is too
heavy burden for them to accept.
Third, although women could restore self-esteem by cosmetic surgery, they
conflict with experience of cosmetic surgery. In a private level, they are in
agony of denying their appearance before. And they can't easily accept their
changed identity after cosmetic surgery, that is, identity as a woman taken
cosmetic surgery. Socially accepted ideas concerning with cosmetic surgery such
as that a natural beauty is more valued than an artificial beauty and that an
artificial beauty is formed at the expensive costs are main causes making them
uncomfortable.
Fourth, women who don't overcome the socially accepted ideas are conscious
of the common notion. So they open themselves 'conditionally' so that they may
not reveal their cosmetic surgery. But women who overcome the socially
accepted ideas want to insist their rightness of taking cosmetic surgery. So they
open themselves 'consciously'.
Women choose cosmetic surgery in their own desire and reveal the fact of
cosmetic surgery strategically. However after the cosmetic operation, they can't
entirely overcome the socially accepted ideas. And the experience of cosmetic
surgery means not to change one's appearance but to deny one's identity before
the surgery and to accept new identity.
