The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the teaching method of visual idea-making, which improves children's ability to see the object of drawing expression flexibly using the method that expand, reduce, transform, and arrange the object visually, has an effect on children's creative ability of drawing expression and their drawing attitude.
This study was designed to answer two research problems for the purpose:
First problem is that according as children experience or don't experience the teaching method of visual idea-making, is there any difference in originality, fitness, diversity, detailed description, and harmonious picture composition of their creative ability of drawing expression?
Second problem is that according as children experience or don't experience the teaching method of visual idea-making, is there any difference in concentration, interest, confidence, sincerity, and respect for artwork of their drawing attitude?
The subjects of this study were 40 full five-year-old children at Y Day-care Center located in Uiwang City, Kwonggido. They were divided into two groups. One half of them was the experimental group, and the other half the controlled group. And they were tested before and after the experiment. Drawing activity using the teaching method of visual idea-making was executed to the experimental group 15 times for 4 weeks, but no special treatment was given to the controlled group.
In order to measure children's creative ability of drawing expression in pretest and posttest, this researcher made a partial revision of the evaluation scale used by Shin Soo-young(1990), Oh Mi-kyung(1995), and Park Hyun-sun(1996). Also in order to measure children's drawing attitude, this researcher chose only the evaluation scale on drawing attitude among those used by Shin Young-jin(1992) and modified it partially.
The collected data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation using SAS program.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, there was a significant difference between the experimental and controlled group in 5 sub-elements of the creative ability of drawing expression. That is, the experimental group which experienced the teaching method of visual idea-making showed significant improvement in originality, fitness, diversity, detailed description, and harmonious picture composition than the controlled group.
Second, there was a significant difference between the experimental and controlled group in 5 sub-elements of children's drawing attitude. That is, the experimental group which experienced the teaching method of visual idea-making showed significant improvement in concentration, interest, confidence, sincerity, respect for artwork than the controlled group.
